Foods you cant have again

I eat everything. The only thing that can be tough for me is bread, it expands in the sleeve and you can really feel it. I try not to eat it, although I have always been a sandwich junkie!!

I eat just about everything including grapes and popcorn and I'm fine. I have had foods that don't sit well though...steak and wings are pretty uncomfortable but I just don't eat them often. :-)

hi, I am 13 months out and I eat popcorn every night (fresh popped in coconut oil with coconut oil on top rather than butter). I love it and it helps keep me "regular" better than Fiber does. hope this helps.

I think there are the not supposed to have (carbonated bevs) items, and then the things we should choose not to have because they are foods that will get in the way of our weight loss and what probably caused us to become obese to begin with (pizza, Pasta, wings, meat with skin like hot dogs, brats, sausages, high sugar foods,etc) I still indulge in a bite or two every once in a while, but, I get the full feeling so quick, I have never felt guilty for the few bites. Nothing bothers my stomach except steak, it just makes me really nauseous so I avoid all red meat now altogether. bread isn't the easiest to digest either but I really dont eat sandwiches any more so its not a big deal. I was not a big popcorn person before, but I have had a handful or two since surgery 7 months ago and had no problem. I have grapes all the time, also no problem. The best advise I have is to manage your Protein, always always always eat protein first. You will fill up fast and not feel the urge nor have a desire to eat the "bad" stuff anyways. I'm still losing 7 months out, down to 198 from 287. Weight loss has stalled a little, but I do admit I luvs the beer :) so now that summer is winding down and I won't be indulging after my kids baseball games on a hot summer night with a cold beer or four, I hope the weight loss will kick back up to 2 lbs a week again. I don't have any banned foods. I chew gum -- there's no way swallowing this will harm you stomach. As a sleever, we still have our original pyloric valve. I could see if we had the gastric bypass since those folks have a man-made one. I go through probably a pack of gum a day - 18 pieces. It keeps me from mindless eating. It just loses its flavor so fast. sugar-free... bubblegum, chocolate mint, lemon square, orangesicle, sherbet, etc. I probably have about six different flavors stacked up at any given time.

Soda? Yep, I have that sometimes too. Not every day as it just takes me too long to drink it. (Baby sips, not swigs like pre-surgery.)

Alcohol? Meh, doesn't appeal to me. My 21 year old self would be appalled to hear my 44 year old self say this. LOL Of course back then, I wouldn't have dreamed that I'd go to bed at 9:30 pm either.

candy? Meh, doesn't hold much appeal. I don't keep chocolate at my desk. I do have a HUGE bowl of hard candies and Tootsie Pops up on a shelf in my cubicle. They don't call my name.

Ice cream? Sometimes. Maybe less than once a week, but a small cone. At least the Dairy Queen is ice milk, not ice cream. Actually, a small cone is too much. I usually get it in a dish to avoid the cone.

pizza? Once a week. 1/8 of a frozen pizza is less than 200 calories. Considering I used to be able to eat an ENTIRE frozen pizza, this is a good compromise.

I am finally able to eat steak again, but it does have to be tender.

Grapes and other fruit? Heck yeah. But after the Protein. (Except for tonight. I had some cold washed grapes on the counter that I was munching on before supper - way too filling.)

I just wish vegetables didn't fill me up so fast!! I now have spinach and baby carrots in my morning Protein shake. I can't taste or see them.

soda makes me throw up I would never drink soda again... I have had popcorn and I've been fine with that. I even eat Cookies here in there.. I love cheese I used to be bad when I started out because I was always on the go because the way I work I used a lot of chicken nuggets i would get a four piece it would take me a couple hours to eat it... but I asked my dad about it and she told me was bad because all the carbohydrate . so I broke my stuff out of that so what I do is I a lot of Lunchables because the Protein and it easy on the go... I do a lot of Gatorade or I do that things are going to Water but I'm so tired of water and I'm picky when it comes to my drinks at 8 Friday some but they made me sick so I don't do fries no more. I have had alcohol I cant do beer because of that frizz it makes me sick to bread makes me hurt bad so I'm so over it.

There goods my surgeon has advised me not to eat, and those I choose not to. I do my best to follow 'lean & green' diet, focusing mostly on lean Protein followed by veggies & fruits. Some days I do we'll, others I struggle. But I try to stay away from the slider foods. Although I love buttered popcorn I haven't tried it. I don't need it, it doesn't have enough value for me to consider eating it, and I don't want to find out if I can! Haven't had any problems with grapes, but they fill me up quickly & I'd rather eat something else like hard cheese or a peach.

There are a couple of foods that give me trouble: still can't eat red meat; chicken must be really moist; anything high in carbs or sugar makes me feel awful - sick, shaky, weak, etc. And today I accidentally had an Energy Crystal Light instead of a regular one and the caffeine made me SUPER sick. Guess I've lost my tolerance for caffeine after not having it for 4 months!

Do u feel the beer faster than before surgery. And how long after surgery did u wait to start drinking again. Im asking because my sister 21st bday coming up and i want to have a drink or two

Everyone is different and what one person eats with ease might cause another to puke! So just take it slow and I think the key is moderation.

As you can see you're going to get as many answers as there are surgeons advising patients.

There is nothing you cannot eat for the long run.

The advice about carbonation? Varies by surgeon. The advice about carbs, bread, etc.? Varies by surgeon.

The only real solid rules you'll see? Alcohol should be avoided for at least six months. However, many drink before that and are fine.

Foods that cause some people discomfort and that you might want to avoid?

Spinach, or any greens, for at least a few months.

eggs are iffy - some people do great, some people have problems.

Beef is very hard for some people. It took me nearly a year to be able to eat more than a few bites.

Some folks have trouble with chicken, too.

Definitely popcorn, at least until you're well into the healed phase. The hulls are dangerous around the staple line and it takes longer for that to fully heal than you might realize.

I couldn't eat lettuce, particularly iceberg, for more than a year without problems.

Foods I still eat in very small portions, and only once in a while (I'm 3 years out):

Flour tortillas (I avoid them altogether, they hurt me)

Rice (one or two bites and I can be fine, or one or two bites and I'm in pain and I never know which it will be)

Pasta (I might eat a bite here or there but it swells like rice)

There is a line to walk. Moderation and being "normal", feeling like you can eat without depriving yourself, is important. But there are clearly foods that you should not be incorporating into your diet as a normal or regular habit until you're much closer to goal. Just because you find you can drink soda and eat popcorn (my particular set of trigger foods, and oh, does it slide) does not mean you should engage in that behavior regularly.

That's the line - and losing weight is far easier than you realize. Walking that line for the rest of your life, eating so that you feel normal without going out of control? That's the hard part. So incorporate what you need to later on, but be cautious about forgetting what made you obese in the first place.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
