Glucose Tolerance Test

Recommended Posts

Word of warning to my WLS patient friends:

I've never had dumping with my sleeve. Ever. Until today. I had a glucose tolerance test which is as follows:

-A 12 hours fast (including no water)

-1 vial of fasting blood

-Drink 12-16oz of sugar Water (tastes awful) in 3 minutes or less. (Ouch and oh the burping)

-1 vial of post glucose blood one hour after ingesting

-1 vial an hour for minimum of 3-5 hours. (No leaving the office, no sleeping, no Water, no excessive movement, etc)

For the normal stomach this is bad enough, but to ingest 100+ grams of liquid sugar on a completely empty stomach that will flow right through the pyloric valve into your intestines is the perfect set up for dumping syndrome. I'll say this, I managed to not vomit but every other symptom was there. The liquid stools, hot flash, abdominal cramping, chest pains, sweating, lightheadedness, dizziness, heart racing, nausea, etc.

Be warned, if you need this test, be prepared for a couple hours of misery. I'm finally home and feel pretty much back to normal aside from some frequent bathroom trips and extreme fatigue. I'm just glad it's over!

Word of warning!! And best of luck if you need this done! I brought my laptop and watched a movie and some TV shows I had saved. I also brought an extra hoodie to keep my arms warm as I have tricky veins anyway.

Good Warning and yes it sucks. Important? YES!

Ask for the jelly Beans next time. Much easier to digest than the liquid. If we open our mouth and let people know what is going on with us there is usually a way around things.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
