2 days post op, scared and a mess

Recommended Posts

Hi, I just got home from the hospital today after drinking my 32 ounces at the hospital and doing fine.. Got home and had my ounce of puréed chicken, waited an hour and now I can't drink my Protein Shake at all... I feel anxious and scared that I'm going to throw up and not be able to do this.. Any advice or encouragement would be so amazing and appreciated!!

Be sure to follow your doctor's nutritional guidelines and call when you have questions. Puréed chicken is relatively heavy... I did not start on that until the third week. Very early on, liquids are the way to go. You need to stay hydrated first and get Protein second. There are many Liquid Protein sources and you can add unflavored Protein powder to many other things (jello, Soups, etc.). I am not surprised that you are unable to drink your shake after eating chicken. I probably could not do that now and my surgery was 4 weeks ago.

There is lots of good advice and support here so please ask questions and search for threads that can help you. The first week or so is very challenging but follow your plan and know that it gets better every day. Hang in there!

Thank you so much everyone, I'm in tears because I feel so crappy. I will definitely focus more on my liquids and not focus so much on the food. Thank you again!

I know all doctors are different but I couldn't have puréed meat for 4 weeks! All liquids... That's seems like too much that soon after surgery. I sipped all day, between Protein Shakes, Powerade zero and skim milk for 4 weeks..

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
