Am I still welcomed here at Vertical Sleeve?

Recommended Posts

I've started my process for the sleeve in March 2013. I jumped through most of the hoops for surgery. When I went for my chest xray, ekg & barium swallow July 1st I received a call

Why would you not be welcome here? There are people here in every stage of the process.

Sorry didn't finish the story, someone came to the door. My surgery scheduler called and told me that the Doctor said that she won't be able to perform the sleeve because I have reflux (go figure), but she will be able to do the rnybypass.

I was totally destroyed. This sleeve been on my mind all year and that's all I worked for. I got depressed and texted a few people. Afterwards I found the app for the bypass and even though its set up just like this one the people are different and I miss the people from this site.

I just don't want anyone to have a problem now that I'm having the bypass and not the sleeve.

**sorry if the words are small, I'm typing from my phone**

I welcome you but I'm confused. I had severe reflux before surgery. Mine went away. Maybe each Dr is different.

I have both the bypass and the sleeve...So I am not going anywhere else.....I get what I need from this forum..You can still apply a lot of what people feel like and think and the encouragement that comes from here....

I don't get it either..most people who are really over weight have re-flux issues...I would ask her more questions before I agreed to that procedure!

Thanks. I think I will talk to her when I go back to see her. Right now I'm at the stage that once I retake some labs (my Iron & albumin was low) I'll get my date and I'll sit down with my surgeon for the second time and we can discuss it then. I really want the sleeve.

I had severe reflux also, and that has been cured by the sleeve. It counts as one of the comorbidities they use to qualify for the surgery, so I'm confused why it would disqualify you from getting it.

It's one of those things that doctors disagree on.

A lot of doctors believe that it will make it a lot worse and in some cases it does. In fact we've had two girls in the last month here have it so bad that they had to convert to the bypass...

Before the sleeve, everything gave me reflux even Rolaids! After having the sleeve my reflux is gone!

Why not consult another surgeon?

My doctor had told me that severe reflux can get worse with the sleeve, I have it bad and I still do. It was fine after surgery esp when he fixed my hiatal hernia. But it has returned so I really need to watch what I eat. But he did suggest the bypass i didn't want it.

The first Dr. I saw on consult said he recommended the RNY for those with reflux. Obviously not all Physicians have the same philosophy. Do your research. One of my "Sleeve Sisters" had severe reflux and she was sleeved at the same time as me. If you decide that you want the Sleeve vs. RNY, then find a Dr. that will do it. From what I've read, the problems resulting from the RNY are far worse then reflux, that can easily be treated with acid blockers.

Maybe it's the "cause" behind the reflux....My surgeon was adamant at my pre-op appointment that he was going RNY because of my extremely large para-esophogeal hernia. we sat down and discussed it and he agreed to go ahead and try the sleeve as we can't go back after a rny.....but I have med issues that won't work well with a rny.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
