2 Weeks out and getting in protein is getting hard :(

Recommended Posts

Any ideas? I started with these shakes I bought from Walmart. They where called whey Advanced it was 30grams of Protein per serving which was awesome and drinking them prior to surgery was good too. After surgery they were too sweet and I would gag just trying to get them down. I have now moved onto Muscle Milk Protein Shakes that are pre-made and they are awesome except they are 14oz bottles and after just about my 8oz i start to feel sick. I'm also eating Chobani Yogurts but what else can I do. Im also eating a string cheese here and there.. let me know forget the cottage... But these items get overwhelming and I start looking for other items.. HELP!

I really like the grape, icy orange and coconut flavors! Also, sugar free Popsicles. :-)

Also, I'm 6 weeks post op and still have one most days to get about 1/2 my required Protein.

Yea, I just read the ratings and saw how much they cost.. A bit pricey.. $40 for 12-16oz bottles.. Very steep... but i guess when your not spending money going out to eat and drink that's a small price to pay for nutrition. Im going to call the company tomorrow and see if they'll send me a sample to see if i want to proceed. More than likely i will being that my choices are running low! Thanks for the info..

PS im loving my sugar free Popsicles!

What I finally got to and am sticking to even now with the clearance to soft foods, is to get in at least 30 grams of Protein in the morning. I do this by making a Protein shake with 32g and drink that during my drive and in place of my former coffee.

This leaves 3 other times during the day where you can get in the other 30 or so. Not sure what your Dr. recommends as your goal but a lot less pressure to get 10g per meal then 32 at the end of the day.

I also make a really good Protein smoothie, when you are allowed blended fruit...

A scoop of vanilla Protein powder (I use the Body Fortress brand from Walmart)

1/2 of a frozen banana (I cut it into chunks before freezing)

A few frozen whole strawberries

Unsweetened vanilla almond milk

Ice

Yummy!!

Yes, I replaced my energy drink expense with Isopure. Lol.

I haven't had an energy drink in 8 weeks. Giving them up was easier than I expected. I'm lucky in that I've always liked plain ice Water. :-)

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
