When was it comfortable to sleep on your side/stomach again?

Recommended Posts

How far out was it before you could sleep on your side/stomach again??

I stopped sleeping on my back eight or so years ago because it always triggered sleep paralysis. I'm four days out and can't get comfortable sleeping on my side or stomach (uncomfortable pressure in the surgery area + irrational fear of popping new stomach like a balloon) but am having old anxiety resurface in regards to sleeping on my back. As soon as I start to fall asleep my body panics and jerks me awake again. I'm exhausted. :/

Hi there, ,it was about four to five weeks before I felt comfortable sleeping on my side or tummy again because the stitches felt tight in my sides and it was uncomfortable. I don't usually sleep on my back either, normally on my tummy, but I got used to it and also found that taking a pain killer like tramadol or paradol helped me get to sleep for the first 3 weeks. Also try propping yourself up a bit with an extra pillow perhaps so that it is easier to get up in the morning when it hurts the most. I found getting out of bed on the left side easier than the right. Hope you get some shut eye tonight :)

About a week after surgery. The first 2 days home from the hospital I slept on the couch, slid into the bend of the couch back and bottom cushion.

I slept sitting up on the couch for about 8 nights, then I was able to sleep on my side in bed. (I have a bad back which prevents me from sleeping flat on my back.) I was able to sleep on my stomach after about 3 weeks.

I had my gallbladder out yesterday and am back on the couch..... dejavue..... but I am not in as much pain this time, so hopefully I'll be back in bed sooner.

I was on my belly 6 days after surgery. I remember it being a bit of a discomfort for like 2 minutes, but then the feeling went away. Good luck!!

I propped a blanket under my belly and that seemed to help with any feelings of pulling etc etc on my side- that was day 5. By day 8 I was ok without the support.

It was about 2 weeks for me. I am a stomach sleeper and the first night I slept on my tummy after surgery was the best ever.

I slept on my side the night of the surgery. I was very comfortable as long as I had a pillow at my stomach. Five days later I went to the beach and laid on my stomach in the sand. I had to dig a hole for my stomach so it was comfortable (just like when I was pregnant).

I was so active right away and didn't feel any pain. I'm not sure why but I guess I was lucky.

I, too, am a side/tummy sleeper. I hope it doesn't take as long this time as it did when I had back surgery last year!

You guys are awesome! I was able to sleep in a loose fetal position last night thanks to hugging a pillow tightly against my abdomen. SUCH a relief! I finally feel well rested and like myself again. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
