Sharp pain on ribs... not sure what to do

Recommended Posts

Hey y'all! I've been browsing topics long before getting sleeved, but hadn't made an account since others have pretty much asked and answered most of my questions. However, I can't seem to find anything specific to this.

I'm 4 days post op and woke up feeling great! I went for a walk in the morning, drank Water since waking, had a Protein shake ( 1st day on full liquids, etc. Until today I felt like I was feeling significantly better than expected. My dad even couldn't believe how great I looked for someone who just had surgery.

Anyway, late morning I began to experience a sharp pain on my left side where my ribs are, right under my left breast. Since there aren't any incisions there I figured it wasn't serious. It also seems to be kinda far from where my new pouch would lie. The pain is more to the side.

Anyone know what this may be? I have a follow up visit on Wednesday so I don't know if to ride it out until then or call the dr in the morning asap.

Any advice or suggestions would greatly help. Thanks to all!

-A

When in doubt, call your surgeons office. It could be a pulled internal stitch or something as simple as a gas bubble. If you don't feel better by morning I would make a call. A heating pad might be helpful.

Good luck.

Left side pain could be gas. Get some GasX strips and if not better by morning, call your surgeon. Of course, if you have a fever, or the pain is severe, go to ER.

Thank you for the advice ladies! I just took 2 chewable gas x and pulled out the heating pad from the winter stuff box lol. I'm definitely hoping this helps. thankfully I haven't experienced any other symptoms like nausea or fever.

Thanks again!

I had this after surgery. It feels like when you ran alot when you were little

Yes!!! That's exactly what it feels like!!! When did it go away? What was it? What you do to make it better?

Thankfully I woke up feeling better. I took gas x, stool softener, liquid lortab, and applied a heating pad for a while. Not sure which one did the trick, but I'm so glad the pain is gone this morning.

I'm almost a year post op and I still get that pain every now and then. I have no idea what it is but it always goes away after a couple of mins. It hasn't bothered me enough to go to the surgeon and I highly doubt they would do anything anyways lol. I had the pain years before surgery and I usually just tuck my hand under my breast and apply a little pressure.

I was hurting a little bit like that after my surgery. But it wasnt all the time and it did not hurt all the time.

I did ask my surgeon and he said that is the incision that he pulled my stomach out from. And I guess it was stretched somewhat. I did not have any stitches, dont know if that matters or not. But I try to ignore it, and I still have that feeling from time to time. I think it is healing from the inside to the outside. And I know that takes longer. But the area had no fever, no redness. Hang in there, it gets better

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
