August Sixer...What's happening and what's not happening...

Recommended Posts

Hi Eveyrone!

Okay, had my surgery on August 6th and tomorrow I get to start eating things like eggs, yogurt, refried Beans, etc. I can also eat baby food but YUCKO...that is just not for me. I believe I am on this for a week or so and then move to soft foods and then normal foods at abour 4 weeks out.

The day I began my liquid diet I was 311 per my scales. On surgery date I was 299 and today, almost one week out I am 287. Wow! I am down 25 pounds from start of liquid diet to today and down 12 pounds, so far, since surgery. I am having to work at my liquids....sipping, sipping, sipping. My hubby bought a diet Dr. Pepper today and although I don't even like them I would have paid good money to have just a taste but didn't want to go there at all so I didn't. Whew!

Took a dose of pain meds last night and instead of helping me relax they seemed to make me keyed up instead. Didn't make for a restful night and today was my first day back at work. Will try to do just relaxation techniques tonight and stay clear of the pain meds.

Can notice a huge differnce in a few of my shirts and it seems unreal to be at this point already. Woohoo!!

Petrified of getting a leak so being super careful about what I am taking in and I take my temperature all the time. Not so much today at work but at times it tends to be a OCD thing. :( Any words of adivce???

I am urinating just fine BUT, and this may be a bit TMI, when should I expect to have a bowel movement? I mean I am passing gass all sorts of ways but nothing is happening as far as having a BM. Should I be concerned?

What were some of your favorite foods when you moved into the soft food stage? Am looking for ideas to keep my tastebuds happy. :)

xoxo

Hi and congrats!

I was sleeved on 07/29. I just started with scrambled eggs last Saturday. I think I'm going to try egg salad, chicken salad, maybe some liver wurst (sounds gross but I love it). I had some mashed broccoli and tilapia last night but the fish was still a little too dense for me. I had made chicken in mushroom Soup in the crock pot on Sunday, the chicken was very moist and I ground it up with my fork before I ate it. Still trying things out myself.

Good luck on your weight loss! I am down 19 pounds as of a few days ago. I'm trying not to weigh everyday because I will definitely get OCD with it.

Keep in touch! I could use a sleeve buddy!

Often the narcotic pain medications reduce the motility of the bowels and you end up with Constipation. If you think you might be headed in that direction a stool softener (colace) is a nice easy on the system way to head off the potential problem. Believe me you don't want to be constipated!

Manda - I love liverwurst too!! Of course the old way would have been to have a sandwich (or three) with plenty of Miracle Whip on it!!! Egg salad sounds wonderful!

Can always use a sleeve buddy!!!

I had my first BM in the hospital at like 3 days out. However it can take as long as a week to a week in a half...but by then it will rip you a new one. I'd say try and take some stool softeners like it was mentioned above.

As for foods, I was told I could have mashed potatoes (some Drs don't allow the starches), grits, cream of wheat (only once or twice), of course soft cheeses and ground up meats/fish.

How much Water should I be drinking per 15 minutes? Should I be shooting for a sip or two every 15 minutes? Thanks!

I was sleeved 6/18/13. I was on clears for 3 days, full liquids for 2 weeks, then puréed for 2 weeks. I've been on a soft diet since post-op week 4. I won't start regular foods for another 5 weeks. Some of my favorite soft foods are string cheese, chicken/tuna salad, Beans and deli meats.< /p>

Week 3(which I'm approaching in 2 days) starts 1 meal of soft foods(tuna/chicken salad, eggs, etc) 2 Protein shakes for other 2 meals. Tried eggs not working for me, Protein Shakes are still making me ill don't wanna go without eating anything. ...Any suggestions anyone?

My Nut told me to try 1-2 oz every 15 minutes then work up to either more per 15 minutes or same amount but quicker frequency (like 5-10 minutes). It was a great (but unrealistic at times) goal which helped me build up my drinking.

I'd say talk to your Nut or Dr. But if you can't do the shakes, try and do other soft foods that have Protein. Beware, many of us cannot do chicken/turkey that's white meat so keep that in mind.

My Dr and Nut had us do phases (pureed, soft, etc) not by meal so I'm not sure how you can do this and still be on plan. I could not do any Protein Shakes post-op so that plan would not have worked for me. Instead I just did foods based on the consistency.

My protein comes from either whole foods or Protein Bars.

I had surgery August 6 also! Yesterday I got my staples and drain removed but this morning I have alot of lower abdominal pain on only the right side! I feel like I have tear and it's really tight, anyone else feel like this? I also had a pretty big hiatal hernia repaired during surgery.. Wondering if that could be what's causing this.. I have been feeling so good the last few days! I don't know what happened :(

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
