Sugar free equals diarrhea?

Recommended Posts

Within the last month I have gone from a high sugar ( two liter per day of soda) diet to basically sugar free, only natural sugar like fruit. I did start eating a lot of sugar free items like fudge bars, pudding, crystal light. Could this be causing my stomach woes?

It could be the various sugar substitutes or alcohols being used, may try them one at a time and see if it's one specific kind that causes you problems.

Sorbitol and the like certainly does that to me. Can be quite "intense". Best avoided methinks.

Sorbitol does it to me too. But surprisingly Splenda messes with my GI tract too. Horrible gas with a little bit, a lot = diarrhea, with horrible gas. :(

Also, Xylitol (found in a lot of gums and other sugar free items) is known to cause stomach issues. I like the suggestion above to try each one and see which one irritates you.

My brother is a type one diabetic but wasn't diagnosed until mid twenties. He had to drastically change his diet and at first it messed his stomach up. He said once his body got used to the shock that it got a lot better. I hope this helps.

I'm one week post op......and on clear liquids.....crystal light, SF popsicles, SF italian ice were all on my list.....I had the diarrhea since surgery....I've switched to just Water and my one Protein drink....and no more diarrhea.......so the SF foods/drinks could be a possible culprit. HTH Good Luck!

Thanks. This does make sense. I'm day 3 post-op on Clear Liquids & the diarrhea has begun. I'm going to back off the sf Jello & sf popsicles like you said.

Yes! sugar free products can cause upset stomach and diarrhea if eaten/drunk in excess. I think you are on the right track. Maybe just cut down on some of it and see what happens.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
