So....did ya cheat any?

Recommended Posts

I am 1 week into my pre op diet and I have to admit, it has been tough. I also admit I had a couple of slices of smoked turkey lunchmeat (a protein) and a couple scrambled eggs. Hopefully that will be the end. So, my question is, who else cheated and did it cause any issues for your surgery?

Every program is different. For me, I didn't have such a strict pre-op diet to follow. The only thing I really had to do was the liquid diet the day before surgery. So, although I don't recommend cheating, you haven't really caused any harm.

Shame on you for cheating!!! But good boy that you did it with Protein :)

It's hard, I know. I just kept in mind everyday that I was doing it so my surgeon wouldn't run into any problems with a fatty liver.

So you can't eat at all? I know these pre-op diets vary by doctor, but mine consists of 2 Protein bars or shakes, 2 pieces of fruit for Snacks, and a small meal with a lean piece of meat and veggies/small plain baked potato. Even that's hard to stick to. Heck I've sneaked an extra Protein Bar on day 3 or 4 before Zumba class to make sure I don't fall out.

At first when I read this I thought you meant you had this stuff 1 week post-op. You'll be grateful if you stick to your plan pre-op because you'll have that much less to lose after surgery, but what you had wasn't so bad. Just make sure you are very, very faithful to your post-op diet, because in that case it can be literally life and death.

Nope. Cheating did not cross my mind during preop. I mean VSG is so much more important than cheating. Why jeopardize your surgery date?

I admit your pre op diet sounds much more severe than mine. What you call cheating was OK on my program.

We essentially were allowed to eat Atkins induction phase food (high Protein, low fat and low carb). Those that are only allowed liquids for 2-4 weeks, man, sucks to be you. :) I am saying that in a nice way of course.

I am on Day 4 out of 10 of my all-liquid pre-op diet, and have not cheated once, thought about it, or will. This may sound harsh, but if you can't follow pre-op instructions, how can you expect yourself to adhere to the lifestyle changes you have to make for the rest of your life? What my doctor says goes, no questions asked, and I know I'm setting myself up for success. Plus, every day I succeed on this diet by not cheating, it gives me the confidence I'll need for post-surgery challenges.

I sympathize, my preop diet is strict and it's been so hard. I'm on day 5 and surgery is August 21st. I ate a small cube of cheese yesterday. It's making puree after surgery sound absolutely delicious :-) Good Luck, Hang in there!

I was on a week of liquids with unlimited yogurt and 1 Protein shake a day. It was difficult to follow for sure. I did cheat around about day 3 and had 2 scrambled eggs for supper. I'm glad I stuck to the diet though. Surgery and recovery was super easy for me. I think my surgeons skill + the pre-op diet assisted me in have such an easy recovery.

I received all my labs from the pre-op testing that occured the day of my surgery. I googled some of my results that were not normal in my blood and urine work-ups. All of them were "off" because of my pre-op diet.

I didn't cheat during the pre-op but boy did I want too! I felt so hungry and deprived. I posted here when I felt that way, got support and stayed the course. I think I was simply too scared of the what if. What if something went wrong during surgery or right after because of something I did. Those thoughts scared me straight. Keep the faith, you can do this.

thanks for this post....I am one week down on the full liquids before my surgery next Tuesday....I did talk to my bestie whose MIL was living with them during the preop phase of her WLS. She did remind me that I probably am not eating enough right now as I haven't had my surgery yet, and that has helped. So has hearing what you all have had to say....thanks so much!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
