Insurance Requirments

Well more accurately, I had my first surgeon appt the same day. At that appointment is where I got my surgery date. The practice I went to, sets up seminars every Thursday and Friday and then has lots of the prospective new patients meet with the surgeon after that appointment.

Hello,

I did not have to do the 6 month diet with BCBS- IL. My first appointment with the surgeon was May 23rd and I was sleeved on July 17th. It probably could have been a week sooner but getting the psych eval in with my work schedule was a challenge.

I too am curious about this. Is this something that everyone has to do or just if the doctor sees fit?

I wasn't required to have a diet for months, and my insurance approved it in 3 days! But it did take months for me to actually get to the surgery because my Iron was so low and I had to take some meds to get my ulcers cleared it was about 6 months to get everything finalized. So I am scheduled for my surgery the 27th! It really depends on the insurance and the person

The psych eval is kind of dumb. You fill out a questionnaire, you talk a bit and then they tell you that you are an emotional eater.

The two hours accounts for slow readers, I was in and out in 40 minutes.

Oh and the bill was 595 bucks. Total scam.

So if they find you an emotional eater does that mean that they won't approve you? The handbook I was given at my initial consultation talks a lot about how being an emotional eater could mean your not a good candidate for the surgery. I admit openly that I'm an emotional eater.

WHAT???? OMG I hope they let you make payments and don't expect it upfront!! Insurance doesn't cover any of it??

My insurance has an annual deductible that had to be met and this put me over the top for the year. The worst thing and I am disputing is that they did not cover the required NUT appointment. They flat out denied it. How can they require something and then not cover at least part?

About the emotional eating, I just acknowledge the issue and said that I knew the sleeve was not a magic fix and just a tool to help me get to my goal and successfully maintain.

Im confused on whether the insurance is making see NUT, physical and phsyc eval or if surgeon is, but im gonna find out because if insurance requires it and doesn't help pay for any of it them im disputing it too!!

I don't blame you! I know that my surgeon requires the nutritionist, but I'm not sure about the rest.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
