Sad about new eating habits

I just had Chinese food for the first time in forever and am pretty bummed about the fact that I could only eat three pieces of chicken and two pieces of broccoli. Anyone have any advice or things I can do to get over my sadness about not being able to eat a whole plate of food?

Chew slower, take more time between bites, concentrate harder on the flavors, savor the moment. Don't talk while eating, don't be distracted. It's the enjoyment you are after, not volume.

Ok. I understand how you feel and I have mourned for food sometimes too. But, it's those big platefuls of food that were a big part of why we had WLS! You can still enjoy food but not in large quantities.

How far out are you after surgery?

In six months you will be able to eat a lot more than that. Savory your food and savory your restriction...

I'm at 8 weeks out. Don't get me wrong I know this is a BIG part of my problem to begin with but I just don't know how to get over the ridiculous mental stuff like food mourning. I have all these strategies for dealing with everything but this aspect of it. It's so insane that you would mourn food but I absolutely do :(. I guess I can try to eat slower, fortunately I have been able to still eat and drink pretty quickly so I haven't been forced to slow down but I guess I need to. I know I also should have put my food on a tiny plate.

I feel you on that one.... I am a fast eater and even the sleeve didn't slow that down (sleeve of steal) so when I just start I am done. I've had the feelings you described but not so much anymore because I can eat more. And when I'm out at a dinner I do tend to slow down so I don't have to wait for others. Tiny bite chew put fork down have idle dinner talk for a few minutes... Repeat!

I agree with Laura-ven, I am almost 12 weeks past surgery, and we go out alot. I talk more than I used to at a meal because I'm not so busy shoveling the food in. Cut it small, chew really well, put down the fork and talk between bites. Savor the taste of the food that you can have. Remember that it's quality not quantity. The stuff that I get now I used to call "Elf food" because the portions were tiny.(They were'nt really they just looked that way to me!) So I get the more expensive cuts of meat/seafood that usually turn out to be a smaller portion but they are soooo good.

I don't have the time and experience that you do, but I realized today that "breaking up with food" is a lot like breaking up a guy who is bad for you. You do it, but at first, you miss the loser! He wasn't the nicest guy and he was really, really bad for you, but there was this something cute about him...and those flowers he used to bring you...awww!

I don't know why I didn't realize it would feel similar to breaking up with someone (something) that you loved. :(

The day after surgery (almost 4 wks) the first thin I thought about was (ll never enjoy a whole cheeseburger. Not that I've enjoyed a whole one for 4 yrs (was banded)! Never really thought id be dissaplinted in getting my revision at once!

Im definately a cheap date now...

I've had the same thoughts. I'm sad I won't be able to eat a whole cheeseburger or a whole plate at my favorite restaurant. It's so much like a breakup and I had no idea that I would have these feelings afterward.

I also have a "sleeve of steel" (I'm totally stealing that!) and I get sad that I'm done eating in five minutes and watching everyone else eat. And it's not like I can drink because I have to wait 30 minutes. I just had no idea how MUCH of my problem was MENTAL until the sleeve.

I'm very happy I had it done. I'm 52lbs down and so motivated to get the weight off! I just want to stop these pity party feelings that come up from time to time!!

2 years out here: just take advantage of the restriction now-- It is temporary!! Lose all the weight you can. I can't eat close to what I did preop but It is a lot more than the first 6 months. :-)
