Hello!

My sleeve surgery was on August 6th. I am still in the hospital because very little is passing beyond my stomach. The surgeon believes that this is all due to swelling of my esophagus and new stomach. Has anyone experiences this? I am very nervous and frankly scared. There are no leaks, but for the first three days I was spitting up lots of blood. I was told for the sleeve they use a much bigger tube down the throat and it probably irritated and scraped it all up. Anyone have a similar situation?

Please let me know....take care!

Joan

Hi, I'm so sorry you are going through this! I hope they remedy it quickly!! I had mine on the 7th and came home yesterday; no issues. The surgeon is probably right, but I hope he didn't make your stomach too small, I've heard of this happening, especially if the patient stretched out the stomach prior to surgery. Did you over-do it a couple of days prior?

I would say I was active but followed all guidelines to a T. He said he removed 65% so not as small as others and that would be about 4 ounces. It's just a terrible feeling when everyone else is moving right along. I fear there could be damage but that is only my fear, the doc says it is what it is, he is not worried and just started me tonight on Jello, ,Popsicles, broth to see how they pass. I have been able to keep food down but can't eat a whole lot before I feel it in my chest. I wonder if that is how others know they reached capacity or am I super tight?!?!

To tell you the truth, I am so sore inside that I can't feel if I'm full or not, I just sip fluids every 5-15 mins or so. If the doctor isn't worried, I would say that you shouldn't be either. Everybody is different and their bodies will react differently. Just keep trying small amounts of liquid and walk around the hospital if you are able to, it REALLY helped me; I did 16 laps in one day - It will help with the inflamation and gas! Has he started you on the antacid meds yet?

Hi;

No doubt your doctor is right.....They do use a bigger tube for your throat....I had this done to me except that was one of the only issues that went away fairly quickly.....The second last surgery I had I could not swallow or drink and it even felt horrible to breath deep...I too was bringing up blood ..Took about a week or so to recover....65% of your stomach is not bad....My Doc. removed 70%....

Your going to be sore for a while as the sleeve and incisions heal..And you will not eat or drink very much even when you start on solids....It is a new sleeve and it takes time to adjust to it all...Just try to sip liquid slowly and do not drink anything unless it is tepid. Not hot and not cold..Easier on the tummy....

For the first few days I couldn't even drink without my chest tightening. Last night, at 6 days post op I tried to eat a serving of sugar free Jello. You know, those little bitty cups they sell?

Half an hour. That's how long it took me to eat it because I felt SO full. From a jello! So I really feel that you're going through the normal stuff here, and try not to worry.

I dont really have that fullness because Im too scared to push it, I can feel every bit of everything that goes down. And I think just liquids and Jello don't really give you much of a view of what it will be like with real food.

Everyone swells differently, and I too spit up and entire esophagus full of dark blood/ mucus, eeewww, thank god I was still in la la land after the anesthesia. I remember being in my room and having to pee, so they got to the toilet and while sitting there I bent down a little and good thing there was a basket right there. It all just came up! I only did that once but wow I look back now and would have freaked. My nurse said it was from the tube down the throat. I had some soreness but it went away fairly quickly the next day

I had the sore throat - in fact temporarily lost my voice for a day or so. No spitting of blood. The tightness you feel is probably a combination of swelling and gas. It gets better with time ... I felt pretty darn good by day 5 or 6 as long as I sipped tiny amounts .... slowly.

It took about 5 days for the swelling to go down so I can really swallow. I told the guy who put the tube down my throat to be extra careful because I am a gagger and that during my c-sec they took it out and it was hard to breath, This time because I told him early I didn't even have a sore throat. I had mine done on the 5hth and was very nauseous and dizzy. I think they should have kept me 1 more day. Give it a another day or so . It sounds like it is swollen.-good luck with everything . Keep us posted

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
