HeatherD 4 Posted August 9, 2013 So. Can someone explain to me why drinking with a straw is bad. I did the other day and got so much more Water in. I haven't done it since but what does it hurt? Thanks!
JoiaRox 430 Posted August 9, 2013 In my doctor's opinion? Straws are fine and hurt nothing.
marfar7 1,533 Posted August 9, 2013 I always thought using a straw gave you less air. Why you get drunk faster drinking thru a straw than sipping. My dr never said anything about straws. But the nurse in the hospital wouldn't let me use one. I've been using one since the day I got home Even the little bit of air it might give you is unnoticeable
Richard Foor 655 Posted August 9, 2013 The thought process is that using a straw gets more air in, the reason they believe this is because when you are sucking through a straw odds are your lips are not forming an airtight seal on the straw and therefore you are sucking air in around the straw. That being said, I personally don't think it will be enough air to be a problem for most people. As such if you drank with a straw and didn't have any discomfort it probably wouldn't hurt to continue. On a side note my surgeon said the straw rule was just for the first week post op anyhow, so if your past that it definitely shouldn't be a problem. Good Luck. Olivia2233 10 Posted August 9, 2013 They told us in our pre op meeting we could use straws. So much was going on I forgot to ask why it was ok. I think lap band peeps can not use them, dont know why??????
newat52 1,613 Posted August 9, 2013 A few Dr's say not to but most are fine with it, especially after the first few weeks. I Am 5 months out and have been using a straw since 3 weeks post op. I would never get my Water in otherwise.
