Pyloric Valve Question

Recommended Posts

So I am to understand the reason we don't drink during meals is because when the pyloric valve knows when things are liquidy enough to pass through it opens up and lets stuff go. We are put on Protein Shakes. So here is my question. If we drink Protein Drinks, isn't that liquid that the valve would just open up and let it pass? That the shake wouldn't really stay in our tummy's making us feel full. I know not to drink 30-45 mins before and after eating, but I was just thinking the valve would feel the liquid and blewp there it would go. Can anyone explain?

I'm not sure because I'm not sleeved yet, but I think the MAIN point of the shakes is so make sure we get as much Protein as possible. We can't eat much food, so we have to supplement.

Peristaltic movements by your stomach move food toward the pyloric valve leads toward your small intestine. liquids do not stay in your stomach very long, but the shakes help you get the necessary amount of Protein you need, especially early on when you cannot eat solids yet. I have seen how quickly liquids go through when getting fluoroscopes performed with my lap band.

The reason you don't drink with meals is because it will help wash the food from your stomach and make you feel less full. The longer the food stays in your stomach the more full you feel. Drinking and eating together can also lead to discomfort or vomiting.

Drinking Protein Shakes do not make you full at all. It just helps to meet your grams of Protein in a day. I am 8 months out and still supplement with Liquid Protein.< /p>

On the other hand, I'm 2 months out and haven't had a Protein Shake in weeks. To maximize fullness, my doctor recommends that I work to get all of my Protein from real food - so I do. As other posters have said, the protein shake just allows you to get your protein in - when my stomach was still swollen post-op, the shake really did make me feel full...but, of course, my stomach's capacity was that of a coffee stirrer. Now, any liquid won't do the "keep me full" trick for any amount of real time. Water helps to satiate me throughout the day, but, yes, it passes through rather quickly.

Yep... Protein shakes are for Protein and real (chewable) food is for feeling full...

Different things, and again each program is different. I am 2 months out and still use shakes.< /p>

The answer to your question is pretty much yes, shakes do not stay in your stomach and therefore do not make you feel full, the Protein is absorbed in the intestines. That is why people always say they don't feel the "full" feeling until they are on solid foods. However, I would also like to mention that my surgeon told me and I have stuck with, don't eat until you feel full, eat until you feel satisfied. Consistently eating until you feel full is more likely to cause problems and possibly sleeve stretching. Good Luck.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
