I am one day post op and it hurts for me to drink anything. It feels like its burning on the way down and then I immediately get the urge to burp. Is this common? I read a lot about staying hydrated. Does this go away? Any recommendations? I've only had one bottle of Water in 24 hours since I've been home and no IV.

Congrats on your surgery, you have taken a big step towards better health. Burping is common with this surgery. My doctor had me drinking 10 ml every 15 minutes that I was awake the day after surgery. It sounds like you are heading towards dehydration and if you are still uncomfortable tomorrow you should call your surgeon for advice. I was in the hospital for 4 days and can't imagine being home any earlier, but I know a lot of people have very little time in the hospital following this surgery. Hang in there it gets better I promise!

I didn't have the burning, but burping is very normal. Try sucking on ice chips, see if that helps the burning. Course that gives you more Fluid as well. Your Protein Drinks count as fluid to. I could only stomach mine if they were cold. You will find what works for you! Good luck.

Thank you all. I just started drinking a Protein Shake and its going down better. I really think its just gas. I get paranoid about dehydration. But I'm just going to sip sip sip all day and pray the pain (gas) away.

Have you been walking as well? I'm pre-op, but many have posted that walking helped with their gas pain.

Try both warm and cold liquid. When I was in the hospital post op all I could get down was warm liquid. Now (almost 3 weeks post op) all I can drink is cold. Congrats and I burp all the time. Mostly when I'm full.

I am on day 4. When I first had Water it felt like swallowing rocks. They explained that if there is a little something in the water like gastrolyte it starts getting absorbed on the way down and so no rock swallowing feeling. This worked for me. I am home now and am improving every day. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
