Help--prilosec immediately post op

Recommended Posts

Were you given prilosec post op? Were you able to take it as is? Did you mix it with something? I was told to mix it with applesauce, but I'm 2 days post op and only on liquids for another 4 days.

Many thanks!

My doctor said I could have applesauce on my liquid diet to mix pills in because of the consistency that it is. It is pretty much a liquid.< /p>

I have a pill crusher, I crush the prilosec, pick out the plastic pill coating and down the powder with a sip of Water. I have been on prilosec generic for years and took it regularly for a week prior to surgery and immediately went back on it after surgery so I wouldn't battle acid.

Dr Alvarez gave us a 10 day supply of some Mexican brand "Zantac" to take every 12 hours. I'm going to check with my PCP about something stronger because I'm afraid I'm going to need it. It sucks, because I didn't need anything like that on a routine basis before surgery. I sure hope I won't need them forever....

I'm not on Prilosec, I'm on Prevacid sublingual 30 mg, but I still had to take my Cymbalta, which is in a capsule. It's not time released, and I brought it to the hospital with me. The nurse broke open the capsule in about a teaspoon of applesauce and I had no problem getting it down. It took several bites to get it down, but it wasn't a problem.

I'm taking my mental health meds...cracking my xanax into pieces, down them with a sip of water; open my prozac and do the same (gag it is so bitter!) And haven't picked my welbutrin back up because it can't be crushed or cut up and I'm not ready to swallow that pill yet. I'm pretty sure I can...so is my Dr. But my gut tells me to wait a week which is what I'm gonna do. My intuition rarely leads me astray.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
