Anyone have allergic reaction to steri strips?

Recommended Posts

I would love to hear if anyone has broken out from the glue or strips? How long did it take the strips to fall off? I am itching like crazy and they have tried Benadryl, Allegra, cream, and now a steroid shot today. Thanks for any advice.

Ps. I am eight days post op.

《Raises hand》Me! I'm allergic to most adhesives, told the hospital & surgeon's office that before surgery, but was still covered in steri-strips and tagaderm Patches when I woke up. I'm two weeks post-op and at about 1-1/2 weeks the hives started; I'm now covered in them from my groin to my neck, front & back. Every day they climb a bit higher (and lower). I've been religiously popping benedryl every 4 hours but hasn't made a huge difference.

I see my PCP on Monday to see if she has any recommendations, as the surgeon didn't seem to concerned in my first post-op visit yesterday. :-(

I took the steri-strips off myself last night at the surgeon's ok.

Good luck!

Lisa

I had the same reaction, but was able to go to an urgent care at the suggestion of my surgeon's office. They gave me a steroid shot and a prescription topical cream. The hives were gone in 24 hours. Hope you get better soon.

Yep! I had big red welts on my tummy for WEEKS! Honestly, the itching was the worst part of the healing process for me.

I used rubbing alcohol as the strips lifted to remove the residue and stop the itching. Hope that helps.

I had this same thing happen as well!?, I fine on day 7 ( I had glue strips) on day 8.... It was a nightmare! That was itching like I didn't know existed! My skin was red under and had a red ring around them. I halos was covered in hive like bumps on my stomach! My mom ended up pulling the glue strips off so I could get relief. I would lay bags of ice on my stomach and cover in cortisone itch cream a lot! Also where I had touched the strips and touched another place on my body, I.e. Face, arms ect...those places also broke out the same way!! I found out TOO late that I'm highly allergic yo adhesives.....hope this helps

Mine made my stomach burst out into a rash. I have some topical steroid cream, I put that on and it cut the itching. The itching stopped when the strips fell off lol

It will settle down after a few days

I beg to differ, based on personal experience. If you're truly allergic it can take more than a month to subside, even with a strong corticosteroid.

Happily for me, tho, I have no signs of it anymore. :-)

If one has had previous allergies to adhesive I assume the chances are high they will react to Steri strips? Is this what people are experiencing? Did most of you know you were allergic to adhesive before hand? I have had allergies to adhesive that were super unpleasant - even in a small bandaid I react - so I am hoping they can come up with an alternative for me... although not sure what!

I'm the same way. It just started six years ago. Now I make sure that I put that I'm allergic to tape on my forms. All my previous procedures they've used paper tape. No swelling and no itching.

Yup, I told the hospital repeatedly that I was allergic to adhesives and they would have to use paper tape, but they still put on steri strips and bandaids. I had a terrible allergic reaction which was actually worse than the surgery, took 4 weeks for the rash, itching and hives to go away, The funny thing was that about 8 different people asked me prior to surgery what I was allergic to, they all wrote it down and then the surgical team ignored it.

I have never had a reaction to adhesives before, but developed huge hives around each incision site. They had used Dermabond (I believe) They got bigger over the course of 3-4 weeks, but they also faded. I took liquid Benadryl and also put cortisone cream over it. It helped take the itch away. Hope it stops for you soon.

I had the same reaction. I took benadryl pills and triple paste for rubbing. It works for me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
