My Protein Bomb Breakfast

Recommended Posts

I really like the chocolate Premier Protein shake, but the vanilla was starting to get on my nerves so I've been playing around with flavors trying to make it more enjoyable. This morning's experiment was a keeper!

I threw all this in the blender

One ready to drink Vanilla Premier Protein Shake

One scoop Unjury unflavored powder

2 Tbs PB2 Peanut Butter Powder (bought on the advice of folks here, found it at Kroger in the organic section)

Some Water and ice

It tasted fantastic!!! The PB2 is awesome. It was close to 16 ounces so it took a while to drink but it was yummy.

Here's the specs

16oz of liquid

56 Grams of Protein !!!

9 Carbs

295 Calories

Strange the things I get excited about these days ... It used to be "I can eat an entire McD's Cheeseburger in one bite" now it's "I got in 56 grams of Protein before 9am"

Hey Bluto, did the PB2 get "grainy" in the drink? Other than the taste, could you tell the pb2 was in the drink? I'm still on all liquids, don't want to mess up. I still have 3 weeks left of my all liquid post surgery diet.

Sounds good.

But there are some studies that state you can't absorb more than 30 grams of Protein at any one sitting, so possibly you're not absorbing all those nutrients. You might be better off drinking half now, then half a couple hours later.

I also love PB2 & vanilla Protein Shake done up in the blender with ice! I use Syntrax Nectar which is only 100 cal and 23 g proteint. It does get a wee bit grainy because fo the powdered PB, but I enjoy that too :P

To second what Butterthebean said.....my printed materials from my NUT specifically say that for Protein Shakes, they should be less than or equal to 180 calories and no more than 35 g of Protein. When I asked why about the protein, I was told that the body doesn't absorb it when you take that much in at once. So.....I would definitely split the recipe into 2 servings!

My NUT told us this as well.

@bucky. Nope the powder blended in great.

As for the other comments. It's good info. That's why I hang out here. Learn something new every day. Thanks guys! It's simple to just drop the unflavored scoop out. Drops it down to 35

So I was the annoying kid that asked where babies come from and wouldn't except answers like "the stork" or "the baby store" I wanted a good scientific answer. That never really wore off, so I decided to dig into the 30g of Protein thing a bit. As it turns out, it's not that cut and dry. I found many explanations and opinions, but this was the only thing I found with research citation.

http://examine.com/f...ne-sitting.html

My understanding at this point (which may still be wrong and I welcome correction) is that your body will use most of the Protein you give it. What it doesn't need or can't process for muscle repair it will turn to glucose for energy or fat.

The average absorption rate is about 7g/hr. A liquid will spend about 4-5 hrs in the digestive process. So simple math, 28-35g of protein gets absorbed. Which is where the 30g per shake comes from. However, if you eat 50g of solid protein say in meat, your digestive system will slow to allow you to absorb the protein that is there.

Okay Bluto...here's the deal.

Yes you can absorb the Protein. But Protein synthesis is the real goal. Without it, no muscle regeneration.

The study was done at UTMB back in 2009 showing that more than 30 grams of protein per meal did not increase protein synthesis. So, you can eat more, but it will not benefit you except in adding excess calories.

Being on my phone at the moment, here's the best link I can find to the info...

But yes...as you say, NOTHING is cut and dry when it comes to healthy eating, weight loss and fitness. For every concrete study you can find proving the sky is blue, some researcher some where will try to prove it's green. That's where real world experience of so many people in the field comes into play. Their experience, while anecdotal, can also illuminate successful strategies that scientific studies fail to do.

Also Bluto...good for you for not accepting anything on faith. There is alot of broscience on the internet, and this site is no exception. Question everything, do your own research, learn and share. That's the best we can do.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
