luckyyou0521 42 Posted August 7, 2013 I (may have) a parathyroid tumor and I may not. My test was inconclusive. Has anyone had a tumor and had wls first before having the tumor removed?
MandaPanda 173 Posted August 8, 2013 I have a thyroid nodule. Not sure if that's the same thing. I just get an ultrasound every 6 months or so to keep an eye on it. Wasn't an issue for surgery.
No game 14,437 Posted August 8, 2013 I (may have) a parathyroid tumor and I may not. My test was inconclusive. Has anyone had a tumor and had wls first before having the tumor removed? I just went through all of this! My surgeon sent me to get a sestambibi scan.. Inconclusive! Then he sent my to the endocrinologist. He retested (blood) and I'm fine bit I have a huge nodule on the left side of the thyroid that he's doing a biopsy in two weeks and them wants to take it out But the parathyroid is fine! Oh sorry, I already had surgery never mind
luckyyou0521 42 Posted August 8, 2013 These tests are not fun at all I wish them on no one. My doctor wanted to send me to another specialist and I told him no since the first one didn't tell me anything but decided to tell me he was the weight loss surgeon at that hospital. That's great but not what I was there for. Also my labs are almost 2 years old so I decided to call and set up some blood work. Hoping my Calcium levels have gone down. If not I still want to have the wls first that way they might be able to get better pictures when I've lost most of the weight. Time will soon tell.

That's what the endocrinologist did a simple retest of the blood! After the surgeon already had me do a 2000 dollar scan. The parathyroid (calcium numbers were fine) He said most surgeons bring out the big guns like expensive scans, when really if the numbers come out weird you should do a repeat blood test first! Ugh... But he found a nodule that's bad so yeah...

futureloser 190 Posted August 8, 2013 I (may have) a parathyroid tumor and I may not. My test was inconclusive. Has anyone had a tumor and had wls first before having the tumor removed? When I had my blood tests done pre-surgery the surgeon mentioned para thyroid was something he'd look at after surgery. He started me on 50,000 Vitamin D once a week. Surgery done and 3 month blood tests showed no issues with parathyroid. I am still on Vitamin D once a week at 5 months post op. 1 No game reacted to this

TexasMiss 314 Posted August 8, 2013 I was diagnosed with hypoparathyroidism about 4 yrs ago when my kidneys stopped playing nice and went into renal failure because my blood serum Calcium levels dropped off the chart. Any doctor worth his salt will not do a sestamibi scan because it's a 50/50 shot on being conclusive. An MRI or CT scan is the only certain way for a conclusive diagnosis. They say it is not hereditary yet 4 in my family have PT disease. Two of us are high, two are low. Mine is manageable by taking Calcitrol (Rx) and calcium (OTC) daily. My aunt on the other hand is hyper, had a thumb size tumor and 3 of the 4 PT glands removed. Your body can still function fine with one (sometimes even a half) PT gland. It hasn't been an issue for me but I have had to modify my lifestyle a bit. I drink almost all Water now and have to manage my schedule. When I get super busy and stressed and do not rest like I should, my system acts up and I get a kidney infection every time. With it usually comes the tingling in the fingers and leg cramps...it's just part of the territory. But, as long as I take my medicine and get plenty of rest I'm fine. It's a strange disease because most people dont even know they have a PT gland until it acts up, but it's completely manageable regardless if your hyper or hypo. I wouldn't let it effect your decision to continue with WLS unless you surgeon specifies so. 1 CharmingTortoise reacted to this
CharmingTortoise 83 Posted August 8, 2013 My grandmother had a parathyroid tumor removed two years ago. The parathyroids are supposed to be the size of a grain of rice, her problematic one was the size of a walnut. They literally missed it on scans because they didn't think it was the tumor because it was so big. Now that she has had it removed she is doing very well. She still occasionally gets the tingling that TexasMiss mentioned but that tends to be when she isn't eating right. Unfortunately, I don't have any advice on the WLS but I did want to mention that it is usually quite treatable and the scarring is quite minimal.
luckyyou0521 42 Posted August 8, 2013 Thanks everyone. I just received a call from my doctors office. They called the bariatric hospital that I will be going to and if I do have a tumor I have to get it removed first. They wanted to set me up with a specialist right away but I told them I would like to wait until after my blood work next week. I'd Like to make sure my Calcium is still high before they start sending me places. So now I feel like I've been doing my 6 months of managed weight loss with my doctor for no reason. I've never made it this far but looks like I won't be having surgery until next year.
futureloser 190 Posted August 8, 2013 Keep the faith! Everything happens for a reason. Better to have it taken care of now and not cause complications later.
