Are you looking for the BariatricPal Store? Go now!

I know its a compliment but still

Recommended Posts

So twice today I have heard "wow! You have lost a ton of weight! You look great!"

Now I should be thankful for the you look great part. But I have not lost a ton. There may have been days where I felt like I weighed as much as a blue whale. But I have not lost 2,000lbs.

Why can't they just say a lot of weight? Why must the amount of weight lost be similar to that of an elephant?

First off, congrats on losing weight. That is awesome!

Second, you know that they are just using an expression. Just like when we said, "I'm so hungry, I could eat a horse", we really didn't mean we could eat a horse. It is merely our way of being dramatic to emphasize a point. Unfortunately, we sleevers find ourselves a bit sensitive to these weight-related expressions, especially in the immediate weeks to months post-op. It's a hormone-stored-in-fat-release thing.

Just remember that the person making the statement is really trying to pay you a compliment and does not have deep seated meanings behind using a general expression.

smh....people just don't think about what they're saying.....I hear what you're saying, and I understand.

Try to just take it at face-value, you've been wonderfully successful. So successful in fact, that it has caused people to say incredibly stupid things :)

ps: congrats on your success!

I agree, you deserve a simple "wow, you look great". I always get bummed after the "los a ton of weight" follow up too. Congrats on your success!

Interesting topic. People use cliche sayings as an energy conserver. It is an effort for the mind to be creative, articulate and Fluid in language. Why make the effort to look up the proper tool when what's on hand will do? Sometimes the cliche does not exactly fit the job, like pliers are not quite appropriate for turning nuts and cause more problems.

Most people don't talk, they blurt.

I've not wanted anyone to talk about my weight for so long.. and now.. no one who has known me for a long time says a word about my weight.. how much i'd love to hear them say... "looks like you've lost a ton of weight finally!.". :)

Just hearing it twice made me think "My god I looked like whale to them!!!"

Doesn't help that I got the roid rage going from prednisone withdraws.

People better watch out. I might just hulk out on them. ;-)

Though one person did say if I lose any more I will disappear soon. That was nice.

The other day my THERAPIST (of all people) fed me the most hated non-compliment a fat woman could ever hear:

"You have such a pretty face."

Coupled with the gem, "You'll be so attractive when you lose weight," I let her know right then and there to NEVER say that to an overweight person again. Good Lord.

Anyway, I feel you, Heyher! Some people just don't know how to say things tactfully although they mean well. Funny how weight loss also brings with it some frustrating social scenarios!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
