NOOO! Sore throat prior to surgery next Monday!

Recommended Posts

So this morning i woke up with a sore throat and now my neck is starting to hurt. I immediately went out to CVS and bought Airborne and Coldez and saline nasal spray. I am hoping this will punch it outta me but what if it blooms into a full cold?! Will they cancel my surgery on Monday?! I looked it up and most said no, they will go on with it as long as you dont have a fever or are congested. I am so upset right now. What if they cancel or reschedule?! I have been through so much just to get to this point. ARGGGGGGG!!!!! Anyone had this problem?

I second what you've heard unless you have some other pre-ex condition that would cause them to be concerned. If this is just a cold or allergies, relax, get well, and even if you still have a bit of a bug, they'll prob still do the surgery.

Also, it doesn't hurt to call your Dr and find out. I know you may not want them to know, but better to find out now than show up and be sent home (which I doubt).

I'd call the surgeon's office to see about possibly getting on antibiotics. I started feeling icky right before my surgery & ended up almost getting pneumonia after my surgery. They didn't cancel my surgery but all that coughing (& peeing) wasn't fun with a sore tummy. If they can nip it in the bud before that would be ideal. The Airborne & stuff is a great idea though.

i got sick 11 days before my surgery with a sinus infection. i felt it coming on and called my dr right away and asked for an antibiotic. normally i wouldnt of done that an i would have fought it out for a bit. but i was on a time crunch trying to get my surgery before the end of 2012 and did not want to reschedule. i know mine was a little longer time than yours but it cant hurt to call and ask if you can get some meds or find out what protocol is if you have a cold.

Thank you so much everyone!!! You all helped calm me down. I called the surgeons office and they told me to go to primary care doctor and get some antibiotics. They did say as long as I didn't have a fever on Monday I will be fine for surgery. My doctor got me started on a zpack. Plus I am still taking everything else. Hopefully this will be kicked our by Monday. Nothing like throwing in another loop in this journey!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
