Severe vs mild slippage?

Recommended Posts

Ok, my question now is....apparently there is more than one kind of band slip. There are those that are so severe - immediate surgery is required. Then there must be some that happen and when unfilled....band will go back in place and then eventually some fill can be put back in?

Is this correct?

.....or could it be that if your restriction is too tight and reflux begins, this can cause stomach to slip up thru the band...........and then you are totally restricted until being unfilled and then stomach goes back down thru band?

I'm soooooooo confused!:faint:

Have you ever blown up a long baloon? That is you gut, now put a ring around it and move it back and forth. Easy right? Well lets move the ring close to one end and put a stitch around it to hold it in place. Most doc's I am told do this. As you heal the body says "Hey what the heck is that" and starts to build tissue around the object. The more time passes the more your body glues this in place. The thing is to allow time for this to happen. Thats why the request to not PB. If the ring moves it may slip back into the place it was before, if it did not go too far.

So its not a black and white answer. If an unfill will allow the ring to return to its place, thats great. Just stop doing what made it move. If it will not return or has gone wandering up or down the dr will fix it.

Moral of the story, play it safe, follow directions. If you think it has moved go get a flouroscope look at it, easy. With the floro you can "see" inside. When the dr does this ask to look and have them point out what you are looking at. A picture is worth a thousand words. As a help look at a picture of what the system looks like, that way you will have a better idea of what you are seeing.

Okay, i have a question. If those are the symptoms of a severe slip, what symptoms do you have is it is a "minor" slip?

I can give a example of possible slippage "I would say mild".

First of all I am going in for total knee replacement. "trust me, this plays a part" I saw my surgeon for my first fill 12/29/06. They explained that a lot of times Anastesia will make you throw up, and this you don't want to happen, cause it can cause your band to slip. So we will give you youre first fill just to lock it in place. I said fine, and it was done. Shirley

Thanks for the info and the visual on the balloon. I makes it more understandable. As far as symptoms for minor slips....mine starts with

being a lot more restricted out of the blue, followed by reflux, which is followed by more tightness, more reflux....to the point of not being able to swallow liquids...........the minute fill is removed.....everything goes back into place and it fine.

Question for Dr. C:

It as been over 3 months since i had a "mild slip" of my band. Once fill was removed, everything went back in place. Had a small fill 2 weeks after and have kept that fill with no problems for 3 months....not a lot of restriction...but can't go crazy so have maintain'd weight. My question is do you think it is ok to try a little more fill again and see if I can tolerate it?

How is your eating, junk or the right stuff? Are you able to walk every day? The band is only a tool. You are down a lot of weight, it takes time and effort.

yes do 30 min on treadmill 4-5 times week; but can consume more bread...pasta...rice w/o feeling a lot of restriction....and I do realize it is a tool....that's why I was thinking a very little tweak might help a little. I'm talking maybe .25 or .3 additional. I was at 2.7 at one time and now am at 1.9....so was going to see if my band could handle around 2.2.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
