What's the worst thing someone said to you?

Recommended Posts

worse for me....The day after I had my son and I was still in the hospital my mom comes to visit and says GEE YOU STILL LOOK PREGNANT. Ummm thanks ma love ya too babe lol. I know now she just wasn't thinking because she's struggled with her weight and still does. She totally encourages me right now too but, man....the hormones were already in a rage and to have that said OUCH!

After having my first baby (22 years ago) we sent pics to all the family, my brother in law called and said Steph you look like a football player. I was 143 lbs when I left the hospital. Needless to say we rarely speak with that one anymore. Total jerk.

3 things spring to mind:

I had just started dating my first real serious boyfriend. His little brother was about 6 at the time and had a friend over. They came into the room giggling and whispering. My boyfriend asked them what they wanted. His brother looked at me and said "We want to know why you are so fat."

I was soooo embarrassed. (that was about 60lbs ago :phanvan )

I think I was in Jr High, me and my little sister had made lunch. macaroni & cheese and hot dogs. (Everything my mother bought/cooked was pre-packaged crap - hmmm .... wonder where my bad eating habits started?) We had just sat down to eat and my mother walked into the room and looked at our plates, which were exactly the same, then looked at me and said "God! When are going to stop being such a big fat pig!? That's a big fat pig lunch!"

I was real little, maybe like 9, and we were at the lake swimming. My mom's friend and her hyperactive child were there with us. I over-heard my mom and her friend talking about how hard it was raising a hyperactive child and how some days her friend felt like she couldn't handle it any more. She was too embarrassed to take him in public most times. My mom said: "I totally understand. Having fat kids is really hard too." My brother was always heavy like I am and my sister was a little chubby.

I find it really interesting how a lot of our parents both contributed to and riducled our weight problems.

My sister was heavy as a kid. One time my grandmother told my sister she had the fattest hands that she had ever seen. My dad (her son) constantly made fun of my mom for being fat and then later on, us. My sister was teased mercilessly about being fat by other kids and it really traumatized her.

My sister has a 1.5 year old son now. She has told my dad that if he ever says one word to her son about his weight that she will not allow him to see her son again. And I completely believe she means it.

My father has called me porky pig all my life so I know how a Dad's words can hurt!!!

omg, My dad has also called me Porkey Pig or Piglet or Ms. Piggy all my life. It doesnt flip me out as much anymore but as a fat hormonal teenager I hated him for it.

About a month or 2 after my surgery, I got the pregnancy bit for the first time. I was at a grocery check out line and I had put the 12 pack of soda underneath the cart. The girl offered to put it in the basket after ringing it up because she thought I was pregnate. I was stunned. I said (pretty disgustedly so) "umm..no" and she knew right away that she had put her foot in her mouth. Btw, she was pretty short and fat herself. I dont know why I expect more out of other fat people. I stayed collected until I paid then bolted for the door, feeling the tears coming. I sat in my car hysterical.

I have also gotten (more then once) "your the prettiest fat girl I have ever seen". Ummm...wtf, is that supposed to be a compliment you asshole?

My worst moment happened when I wasn't but about 30lbs overweight, my EX (for good reason),

This was about 20 years ago, we were ahem....showering together and he said "your face has gotten so round, that when your hair is wet you look like a boy".

It hurt my feelings so bad, I cried like a baby, he apologized, but it didn't matter. That has stuck with me to this day.......To this day, when I look in the mirror with wet hair....I see a boy's face.

:phanvan :lost1.5lbs: I've often thought that this is one of the reasons its so hard for me to even go anywhere without make-up on.

I guess it's a toss up between when a co-worker asked if I was pregnant and being at Annapolis Mall in 1992 (and I was 140 lbs then) and a teenage boy walked by me and said "pig". My come back to the co worker was "no, I'm just fat".

A few months ago, a woman at my work (I was training her as my replacement) was looking at my wedding picture that I had on my desk. Since the picture was taken (just over 6 years ago), I have gained about 80 or 85 lbs. The woman then said, "Is that you?" And I said "yes." And then she replied, "Wow, you used to be so beautiful." That made me so sad and mad. I can't wait to be banded.

My worst experience was the fault of my boyfriend at the time, he's now my husband. Needless to say he has changed completely. He loves me for who I am now...

So at the time we had been together for 3 years (we've been together 9 years now) and I loved him dearly and as far as I knew he loved me as well. I had gained probably 60 lbs since we had gotten together, no excuses, I had just gotten lazy and eaten too much. Well I knew he didn't like it because he constantly commented on my portion sizes. He made comments like, "Aren't you full yet?" and "Haven't you had enough already?" Keep in mind that he has been about 80 lbs overweight since the day I met him, so he's kind of a hypocrite. So one day he told me, "Since you gained that weight, I am not attracted to you anymore." I cried for months after that. It's 6 years later and it still hurts.

He felt like total crap after that but I still feel a little resentful. You may be wondering, why did you marry that guy? No worries, he regrets what he said and is SOOOO different now. Thank goodness!! :)

Upon telling my mother I'd just gotten engaged she said, "Well, I hope you're going to lose weight--no one wants to watch a bride waddle up the aisle..."

:faint:

I have both laughed and cried with your stories. Makes me sad that even the ones who love us the most, can hurt us the worst.

My father used to call me "Tumba" and laugh at me, literally laugh at me. He was loving and attentive and protective in every other way but with my weight.

People just don't understand that obesity is NOT a character flaw, or a weakness, or laziness. It is a brain disorder, a personality disorder, whatever it is, the problem is NOT yet understood by the medical communtiy and obesity has not yet been solved.

The lap band is helping me achieve what might otherwise be near impossible.

I've had so many incidents where I've been mocked, pointed at, laughed at, insulted, I've had guys come up to my face and go AHHHHHHHH, I've passed by guys in a club and I'd randomly turn around to them being all like AHHHHH behind my back, but I can remember a few that just stung.

I was walking home with a friend and some guys in a car yelling "YOU'RE FAT". that was humiliating.

Being on the subway and some guy making a round motion to his friend.

two stupid kids saying shit to me , getting off the subway and one was making a fat gesture and one pointed at me.

Having things thrown at me in a bar.

It came to the point where I had anxiety leaving my house. I'd avoid crowds, or large amount of ppl that looked like they would laugh at me.

My step mother telling me I couldn't use the trampoline cause I'd break it.

Noone wanting to sit next to me on the bus cause I take up too much room.

Being called an ugly cow by some guy on a bus.

Oh. The best. This one I'll remember forever. We were in a club and some guy came up and started talking to me. I thought he was some guy I knew so I was nice to him. Then he goes "oh, my friend over there likes you and wants to get to know you better". I look over and the guy is shaking his head no and all their friends are laughing. I basically got used as the "ugly fat girl" bait.

Things like this happen to me on a daily basis, which is why I decided to get banded.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
