I can't seem to get used to NOT drinking with my meals!

I do exactly what Tess does. My family teases me about my need for "moist meat", but it really does make a difference! It also gets easier to eat dryer foods the further out you get from the surgery.

It's is one thing I've been confused on. I've read that doing so will cause you to be full and I've also read that it can cause dumping problems because it washes the food out of your stomach. So which one is true or are both true? I find I don't drink a lot before a meal anymore. Back when I was drinking sodas I'd go through a few diet cokes before and during a meal, partly with the help of a straw and partly because they tasted good. But now that I'm off carbonated beverages, I find I don't even really touch my Water at a restaurant.

It is both...although "dumping" comes about for different reasons (what you've eaten, specifically) than liquid intake with food. The issue besides potential physical discomfort from drinking w meals is that when we drink the liquid helps the digestion of the food, and they want us to stay satiated for as long as possible, so that means no helping our stomach out.

I used to sneak a few sips, but I now find that I feel more full longer if I don't have a drink until at least 30 minutes after I eat. The feeling of "I need something to drink NOW" passes after 5-10 minutes. I set my phone alarm for 30 minutes, and by the time it goes off I find the thirst has passed. Sometimes I forget to drink even after the alarm had gone off. Try it!

My dr told me a couple tiny sips with meals is ok. I don't tho...doesn't seem to bother but I am thirsty all the time. Before surgery I drank 12 cups of Water a day. No I'm not diabetic just thirsty.

Why is it we can't drink with meals ??

Several reasons: the liquid triggers the pyloric valve which makes your stomach empty faster thus making room for more food, it helps digest hard Protein faster thus defeating the point if the sleeve and gradually over time it can stretch the stomach a bit. Best example I can think if is that old science experiment of what can I put in this jar? Fill the jar to the top with rocks and it is full, except you can still add sand, after the sand reaches the top the jar is full, except you can still add Water....

Scary stuff when you have gone though major surgery to have a tiny tummy that fills up fast.

I had surgery April 2011 and I can tell ya drinking with meals is the key to slowing down your loss or even gaining. I have a few times over the years done it to be able to eat more or to look "normal" at a Restaurant in the beginning. It's a slippery slope :)

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
