I can't seem to get used to NOT drinking with my meals!

Recommended Posts

This is one thing that I am struggling with the most! Will I ever get used to it? I try not do drink but then I am just so thirsty I resort to sipping a bit, and I end up paying dearly for it. When will I learn

I'm having the same struggle. I try really hard not to take a sip, but sometimes I just need a little moisture. I try & make it the smallest sip I can & I haven't had a problem so far. However, I definitely don't want it to become a habit!

I think this will be the hardest change for me to make! It is just instinct to grab something to drink when I get food. I have done it for all my life. It will certainly be the hardest habit to break...I am trying now to change some things in preparation, and this is one area I am failing.

Perhaps you need the person you're having your meal with to nag you. I still slip now and then but my wife is quick to correct. It just takes time and persistence.

Hahaha....he does....but I'm pigheaded and do it anyway. I'm sure he finds a bit of pleasure in my tummy ache afterwards lol.

I have to be honest - I have started drinking just a little bit (maybe 1/8 cup of water) with my meals especially if I'm doing anything spicy. I haven't had any discomfort luckily. Guess if I do or stop loosing weight I'll need to revisit.

I do not have my surgery yet but I find that I need to place my glass out of reaching distance. So when I do reach for it to take a drink it is a very concious effort.

I haven't been sleeved yet but have been trying very hard to follow the guidelines but have very little success with it. It really surprises me how much of a habit it is for me as I thought it wouldn't be that hard. I think I am going to have to be follow other's advice and just not order anything when out.

This is what took me the longest to get. Now as a post-op, I don't order a drink when going out and don't bring everything for my meal to the dinner table (if I have to get up to get something...I just won't have it including water).

Also, what helps me is learning what foods are too dry. I noticed any white meat (I mostly eat turkey) dries me out, as does anything with hidden wheat/flour/etc. Bars are the worst offenders so I literally have to make myself not cheat when I eat those.

There are times when the choice is drink something or eat (bigger problem for me now). I usually opt for the drink and put off eating.

I have the same problem. I usually end up taking a swallow of something when I finish but I don't eat enough to feel too full. So far not a problem.

I find that I can quit drinking right before I eat--I only need to wait about 5 minutes if it's Water. But I usually need to wait at least half an hour and sometimes 45 minutes before drinking after eating. So at a restaurant, I'll order a drink when we first get there, drink what I want, then put it aside before the food comes. I get so annoyed when the food and drink come out at the same time. Then my food is cold by the time I can eat. Sometimes now I will order a drink and wait to order my food because of that, where before if it was someplace I knew the menu, we would just order both at once.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
