Grocery shopping is no fun anymore!

Recommended Posts

I'm 3 weeks post op and went grocery shopping for the first time today. I'm still on full liquids (4 wks) and my husband is a low carber. It was NO FUN! All we got was meat, veggies, and pea Soup.< /p>

Grocery shopping used to be fun...when I loved to eat.

dma2013,

I'm still in the deciding on surgeon & preparing for before & after. Can you please provide your list of groceries you buy now. It would probably help a lot of us out who are PreOp who struggle in knowing what will we will buy once we do our surgery and help those who already PostOp.

I actually love grocery shopping still. The only thing that has changed is that our grocery bill is cut in half. We dont keep junk in the house anymore. Even though my hubby didnt have surgery, he eats healthier now and is way more active. So the money we save on sugar, junk and pop we save for vacations and new clothes for me lol.

Right now I'm on full liquids. The only things I can eat are:

Cream Soups (on a split pea kick now) and broth

SF Pudding/Jello/Popsicles

Yogurt

Next week I start soft foods (adding egg salad, tuna salad, mashed potatoes, refried Beans and cheese, creamy Peanut Butter, etc)

All hubby eats is literally meat and low carbs veggies (green Beans, broccoli, salad stuff) and occasional cheese. I've never, in the 2 1/2 yrs I've known him, ever seen him eat a piece of fruit. he can't get it thru his thick skull that some carbs are healthy. ALL carbs to him are evil.

Whatever works for you. As I stated above, grocery shopping sucked today!

Not too much help with your questions, but it's honestly all I bought today!

The surgical office I am going through provided me with a shopping list for all the stages of pre and post op diet.

Brighteyes,

Thats awesome that they do that for their patients. Makes it so much easier. Can you by any chance please scan and post that list on here by any chance. It could help a lot of us who won't get something like that.

It's just temporary. Give it some time. I'm four and a half months out and I LOVE to grocery shop.. EVEN MORE THAN BEFORE.. Now I can buy the expensive items that I NEVER could afford before. I bought four ounces of 10 year aged extra sharp cheddar last week at $21.00 a pound. It was DELICIOUS! I also buy seafood and expensive cuts of meat, and AWESOME looking produce. I'm not just looking for things that will fill up my enormously large stomach anymore so I can focus on QUALITY rather than QUANTITY.

I was just thinking about this today. With eating less I am almost certain I can purchase better quality food. Thanks for sharing. It's something to certainly look forward to. Hope to be able to do more organic foods than just dairy like I do now.

I will but I will caution against using it unless your doctor has recommended the same diet. I have noticed that people have different nutritional plans and I don't want to mess them up with their doctors orders.

Perhaps you could write down a list of your groceries so we know what your buying now?

Oh and can you give us a menu of your weekly meals so we can get an idea of what your doing?

It would be helpful..

Wife and I both had WLS. In both the grocery purchase department and restaurant department life has taken a definite upturn. We can buy better groceries and much less of them. In the restaurant we can split almost anything and even have some for take home.

We do not at all feel deprived.

Equipped with a freezer, a microwave, proper storage bags and tupperware we are the masters of eating well on the cheap.

That's fun for us. :D

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
