Prednisone

Recommended Posts

So I am just wondering if anyone else on here has been on prednisone post sleeve.

I was it for three weeks and it sucks.

Also I haven't gained a lot of weight, but I am not losing and my face is puffy and my tummy is all distended. Other side effects of anxiety and depression which triggers head hunger. I'm done with the treatment, but side effects can linger for weeks to months...

Just needing to vent about this sucky situation.

Pity party for heather....

I had been on Prednisone for years but managed to get off for the surgery. my doctor said the sleeve would heal faster. I am struggling off the med with muscle pains but hope to stay off for another week. I was lucky that my mood gets better on prednisone, i am just happier--go figure. and it does not generaly hold fluids at the low doses i was on.

Good luck.

Prednisone puffed me up while I was getting cancer treatment. It was intended to alleviate the side effects of chemo. That coupled with Lupron anti-testosterone hormone treatment packed on the pounds. Anxiety, depression, yup.

I feel your pain.

I finished my round of treatment on Wednesday. I took mine for a recent ms flare up.

Neurologist told me side effects can last for weeks after you finish. I was always given solu medrol and though it sucks I could tolerate the side effects better then prednisone.

Protein Shakes for me for the next few weeks.

My hands look like baseball gloves from all the Fluid retention.

I am on Prednisone right now... I was put on a course of it because last Monday I had an awful allergic reaction to something (still not sure what) and they put me on a 12 day course. I am swollen, my face and hands are puffy and my stomach looks bloated... I have fluctuated badly with my weight and now I have put away the scale until after I am off of it! I know it will take sometime to completely get out of my system and all so I am hoping I can resist the urge to get on the scale, especially since I am 10lbs away from a 100lb weight loss and my goal weight... We will see what happens...

I would hold off on weighing for about a month. It takes a while for the side effects to end even after you take your last dose.

Boo prednisone.

I was on a 9-day course of prednisone from July 6th to July 14 for a bad case of poison ivy. I gained about 10 pounds over those 9 days. The following week I lost those 10 plus another 5 or 6. Around July 21st, I gained 2 or 3 pounds and have been stalled ever since. I don't know if the prednisone is causing this, but I'm beyond frustrated and ready to start losing again.

Prednisone stays in your system for a long time after you quit taking it. Were you on a low dose? (10mg a day or under) If so, then you should be nearing the end. I was on a 14 day high dose (1 week 30 1 week 20) It takes a bit of time for the adrenal glands to kick in and start working properly again. Also make sure you do low sodium for a few months. Prednisone makes you retain Water like no other.

Right now I have moon face, swollen hands, distended belly, rash, and some psychological stuff. It sucks, but hopefully in a few weeks it will start to go back to normal.

While the adrenal glands are effected by steroids it's important to remember that-

The adrenal cortex, the outer part of the adrenal gland, secretes a hormone that has an effect on the metabolism, on chemicals in the blood, and certain physical characteristics.

It produces hydrocortisone which helps control the body's use of fat, Protein, and carbohydrates.

It also produces corticosterone which with hydrocortisone helps control inflammatory reactions in the body as well as the immune system.

The adrenal medulla secretes epinephrine which we all know is adrenalin, and what adrenalin does. It also produces norepinephrine which has little effect on smooth muscle, metabolic process and cardiac output, but a large effect on regulating blood pressure.

So for a while the main thing to focus on is staying hydrated and not getting sick. Also try not to stress too much.

I'm not 100% but it could just be some lasting Water retention.

Just keep on keeping on and your body will "reset" itself soon. :-)

Oh lord. Sort of wish I hadn't read this! I'm on a short but large course of prednisolone (thanks to a bad reaction to yet another drug) and less than 3 weeks PS.

I thought my stomach was looking puffier today. <heavy sigh> And really, I don't really need help being cranky and anxious. lol!

I'm doing better. My bloating has gone way down. Just drink lots of Water while you are taking them. A short dose won't mess you up too bad for too long. But a stall may happen. Stick to the plan and you will be fine. :-)

I have been on it twice in 9 months for eczema. It has put me in a stall that has lasted 2 weeks past the last day of the pills each time. But- I have continued to lose weight after coming off.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
