Afraid of swallowing pills after sleeve :(

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for my sleeve on 8/8. I have RA and fibro and take a lot of pills. I can't swallow them with liquid only. Always have to eat a bite to push them down. Nervous that after my sleeve, I won't be able to swallow my meds. Would like information, suggestions, thoughts. Thanks.

have you tried crushing them up? I know my dr told me that any meds would have to be in a liquid form or crushed....maybe that will help you. GOOD LUCK!

I also have to crush mine. Maybe you could do that.

Some meds are not crushable tho, particularly if they are "extended release" tablets. You will have to talk to your primary doctor about comparable pills that are crushable or in the capsule that can be taken apart. Most meds are offered in various forms :-)

my NUT and doc did not have trouble letting me try right away and it was not so bad. even moderate sized capsules, although seriously one at a time and spaced apart! the small tiny pills I can take two at a time. the hardest for me are the metamucil caps which need to have lots of Fluid with them, but within five minutes the full feeling in my stomach passes.

I had no problem with pills after surgery. I took approx. 10 a day pre-surgery but left the hospital with instructions to only take 2 1/2 pills. I asked my dr specifically about swallowing pills (before surgery) and he said there should be no problem. If I take anything that may make my stomach feel queasy I eat a low fat piece of string cheese at that time. Good luck with your pills, You may find you need to take less after surgery :)

I have the same concern but my surgeon has said not to worry -- he said that the day I come home (day after surgery), I will be able to take all my medications. As someone here suggested, I'm also looking into whether there are other "forms" of my pills (i.e., liquid or dissolvable) -- just in case...! Good luck to you!

There are some great suggestions here. My surgery was Thursday August 01, 2013. I have Fibromyalgia and high blood pressure. Two of my meds are crushable, two are in capsule form and cannot be opened so I have to work with my doctors to find a liquid or crushable version.

I was in the hospital for 4 days. While there, I worked with my post-op nurse on this issue. We discovered that the two medications that are crushable will go down better and stay down if I sprinkle the powder over a teaspoon of warm chicken broth or plain tea or coffee and sip the mixture down and then quickly sip a second teaspoon of warm liquid.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
