Hi, I hope this is the right area for this question! Anyway, I was wanting to know if it is okay to take your medications following surgery? I take three capsules of Meds every morning that I have to take or I lose my mind kind of thing lol. Will these capsules be safe to take following surgery in their proper form? I could not imagine having to pop open the capsules and put them in water! Thanks in advance. Jack

It's best to ask your surgeon they all have different ideas on this. For instance my surgeon made me crush or pour (from the capsule) my medication into a spoon with Jello or yogurt for the first month or so.

My surgeon said capsules were ok but any tablets larger in diameter than a pencil eraser had to be crushed. Chech with your surgeon to be sure.

Yes, definitely check with your surgeon. There are 3 responses and 3 different answers already!!! Mine said all my meds would be fine and said taking them one at a time with a sip of something warm would make it the easiest to take them. The first day, it took me an hour of sipping and pacing to get them all down. by day 7 I was able to take them all at once with a sip of Protein Shake.< /p>

For sure check with your doctor.. Not every medication can be crushed. And not every medication can be restarted soon after surgery. :)

Good question, and I had same worry ( I'm one week post op... I take depression medication, high bp, heart burn, and sleeping... And I asked about them because they are all extended release.... My doc told me I was okay but still check with your doc.

I also had a normal check up with my normal doc and double checked with her and she even checked my tummy staples for me.... And one is a little irritated so she gave me better antibiotics to put on there....

Best of luck!

Ellie

Thank you all very much for the quick replies and the advice! God, I hope I don't have to crush them but if I do, the Jello and yogurt is a good idea. Ellie, congrats on your surgery and good luck on your weight loss!! I can't wait to get mine done next month. Jack

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
