Having Second Thoughts?

Recommended Posts

Is it worth it? With the long-term complications, like erosion and gastro-esophageal problems, is it worth it?

I was all set to get a band, until I was reading about the long-term problems on the board. They seem pretty common for those who have been banded 2+ years. And I just got off Prilosec. Don't want to spend the rest of my life back on it.

Is it worth it? I'm having second thoughts. Has anyone just gotten banded for under 2 years and then had the band removed once the weight goal was attained?.

I'm at 41 BMI, about 100 lbs to lose, so it's not as if my life depends on it - yet. Am I better off doing it and getting it removed? Not doing it at all? I'm so confused!

:)

As has been said on other threads, keep in mind that people tend to post more often when they are having problems, leading to a perception that most/all of us do. That's not true, those of us doing very well don't start threads to say that. I hang out here because I still have a lot to learn, and I like the group here. But other then a couple of PBs, I haven't had any problems at all yet, and DH who is more then 2 years out hasn't either other then the PBs.

Yes, some people do have serious complications. I don't mean to minimize things for them. But I looked at the numbers, and the chance of having serious health issue if I did nothing and stayed Morbidly obese was MUCH higher then the risks from the surgery.

I wouldn't think of having my band removed unless it was medically required. I know that losing my weight is less then 1/2 the battle, and I don't think for a second I could be successful long term at maintaining without my band. I have too many years of experience to the contrary.

Well - I am coming up on only 1 yr - so I am no expert... but, frequently there have been posts by people who had the same worries.

Those long-term banded people come out of the woodwork to tell us all about how they are doing great and have no complications.

It's true that the complications forum is full of the various things that can happen - but please keep in mind that there are thousands and thousands of members on this board. I am pretty sure that if it were possible to do the math, the percentage of complications would seem much less scary if you calculated against the whole population of this board.

Take your time. Think about your history of dieting. Don't let us push you into anything - but don't let your fear talk you out of it either.

I just keep in mind that every minute I have my band is another minute for my brain to be trained to accept less food on my plate and my body to accept less food in my system. The longer I have it, the better my chance of long-term maintenance becomes. I am hoping to have my band for a long, long time.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
