brittersmom 33 Posted August 2, 2013 I'm 7 weeks post op and was curious as to when diet soda is allowed for most? I don't have a drs apt until the end of sept so ill ask him then but I'm curious as to what others do if any at all.
920amy 409 Posted August 2, 2013 The typical rule is 'never', because of the carbonation. You will get many different stories from some people making if flat and drinking it, and others just flat drinking it. Personally, I'm almost 9 months, and I am 100% soda free. I gave it up before my pre-op and now that it's out of my system I don't even miss it. I try to eat a lot cleaner, and even the diet sodas are so full of artificial sweeteners, and other stuff, I don't think it's worth it. It's a personal choice for everyone, but most surgeons label soda as a 'never again', all are different though. Good luck. 3 Tpool, Getting Wispy and nmck reacted to this
SassySenior 111 Posted August 2, 2013 I hate to burst your bubble, but soda and carbonation are not allowed ever again. It can stretch your pouch. I feel for you, I really do. The #1 thing I find hardest to even think of giving up is soda. However, after all I've gone through to get to this point, I cannot for a second consider doing something that might undermine my surgery. So no soda for me. I've already incorporated a new drink into my daily regimen, and cut back my soda from 3-4 a day to 1. But what I'm going to do is continue to drink my favorite diet soda, after it's sat long enough for most of the fizz to be gone. I mean, come on ... first, I had to give up alcohol, then I had to give up cigarettes, now I have to give up candy and most/all Desserts. It's sadistic to add soda to the list. But ... c'est la vie ... what will be, will be. Good luck to you.
kj44 215 Posted August 2, 2013 Yeah. Losing soda was a hard one for me too. I was a true diet cokeohaulic. I weaned myself off so that a month pre op i was soda free. Total 5 months now. Still miss it (sigh) but I've pushed thru too much to revert back to old vices. I'm steadily losing(not as quick as I'd like. But as quickly as I need to) and I feel better already so I am anxiously looking forward to how I will feel minus another hundred pounds.
cindymg 629 Posted August 2, 2013 I was a 30 year Diet Coke addict. Like 4 liters a day. I had to give it up several years ago after I burned my esophagus ( don't ask). Then, about a year later, I tried drinking a diet Sprite. It burned all the way down! It was horrible! Was enough to make me swear off soda forever. I'll bet you will find the same thing if you try drinking diet soda after having been off of it for awhile. 1 BrooklynRaven reacted to this
Flup 48 Posted August 2, 2013 Another Diet Coke addict here... I haven't had any since a few days before surgery (in fact, I'm 9 weeks and 1 day clean as of today!) and while I do miss it at times, I know that I'm better off without it.
ribearty 544 Posted August 2, 2013 It is not allowed by my doctor (lap band) and won't be after I have revision surgery. I had to quit drinking soda for other medical reasons, and then had one after a year or so of not drinking any, and it tasted awful.

JProx 161 Posted August 2, 2013 If you can don't even go down the soda road, it leads back to bad choices.
Heyher 581 Posted August 2, 2013 I was told never preferably. But if I wanted soda to wait three months. Then pour over ice and let it go flat. I enjoy a Pepsi next from time to time. But it is a treat not a major staple in my diet.

SassySenior 111 Posted August 2, 2013 brittersmom - Since you haven't replied to any of the responses to your original post, is it safe to assume you're thoroughly bummed and/or hate what you heard?
brittersmom 33 Posted August 2, 2013 Sorry I haven't replied. I had a garage sale this morning. I've been super busy. I completely understand the no pop. I'm bummed but I've been without for 9 weeks so I'm sure I can handle it : ( 1 SassySenior reacted to this
Lannie2202 25 Posted August 3, 2013 I started drinking diet ice tea when I get the pop craving.
sheilarae 84 Posted August 3, 2013 I too was a diet dr pepper addict...drank it almost 50 years. I quit cold turkey and discovered diet peach tea ( Snapple). It's the hardest thing I've had to give up but I'm committed to a new healthy life. Pop is full of chemicals and can eat thru my new stomach. Hang in.
