Gastric sleeve story

Recommended Posts

I'm a 37 year old female who has been diagnosed with depression, fybromyalgia, and Rhumetoid Arthritis. I was on a ton of medicine trying to control the pain and different meds. To control the depression, I weighed 130 lbs before I got severely sick. After taking all of these different pills I gained a ton of weight I was now up to 285 lbs in a matter of 8 months. My doctor was trying to figure out a diet for me,to,go on because I couldn't walk my legs would swell horribly I couldn't sleep or,do anything for that matter due to the pain I was in so I had brought up to him about the sleeve, and he said ok we can try this (since I went on over five diets that did nothing) I went and got the surgery done it was a slow and hard road to get where I am today but its well worth it I currently weigh 155 lbs. and yes I still have pain but nothing as bad as it was back then. I'd recommend this to anyone who has trouble loosing weight or have any type of disease.

Thank you. You have no idea the hope this gives me. I'm 39 and I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis roughly 4 years ago. The combo of steroids and depression caused me to really pack on the pounds. Now I'm sporting sleep apnea, fibro, and high blood pressure. I'm on several meds in for pain that seem to really be doing a number on my body in general... Not to mention I barely make it through a super stressful job. I fall into bed around 7pm only to head back to work at 7 am.

I see this surgery and losing the weight as a way to get my life back.

Thank you for sharing your story. I went through a difficult time as well. Diagnosed with Fibro, depression, osteoarthritis, pre-diabetes, etc... I also went through a divorce moved 3 times and started a new job, all in less than two years. It was nothing I would wish on anyone. I gained a lot of weight, tried every diet I could think of...nothing helped. I started working with a NUT last year through my employer. With the support of my family and primary physician I was sleeved on 7/22/13. No regrets!

I read stories like yours and I know this was a good decision for me.

Congrats on your weight loss, and journey!

I also have RA and fibro. I take a ton of meds, including steroids and . I have had days where I couldn't walk, times where I gave slept 25-30 hours at a time (minus going to the bathroom). Also have osteoarthritis in y knees. When I first started the pre op diet 25 days ago, I weighed 410 pounds (I'm 5"3'). I'm down 11 pounds and feeling some better. I think the food itself that I've been eating has helped so much. I will be on a liquid diet tuesday and Wednesday and will be sleeved on Thursday. I sure hope the surgery doesn't cause the RA or the fibro to flare.

I'm 45 with arthritis and degenerative disc disease in the lower back. Had a hip replacement at 43. Not able to exercise enough after surgery- I packed on the pounds. I was sleeved July 24, 2013 and am down 14 lbs but patiently waiting for when I can really feel it in my clothes. I worry about being able to meet Protein and Water intake. That is my daily struggle for now.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
