Feeling jipped

In a few days I will have my 1 year surgiversary and feel like I never had surgery. I'm disappointed and feel like I didn't accomplish anything. I was 224 when I started this journey and down to 188. I teeter between 185-188. The sale or measuring tape won't move! I feel disgusted and try to keep working it but still have no results. Feeling so blah lately and quite frankly like I was cheated and disappointed I went though so much for so little.

I understand how frustrating that could be. Have you had a endoscopy or swallow to make sure your surgery was done correctly. The other thing you could try is the 5-day pouch test. It helps to "find" you restriction again. The other thing you might be interested is joining our group that is following the 5:2 lifestyle...regular eating 5 days a week, fasting of 500 calories twice a week. Give it a try and see if it works for you. It has been working for a group of us, and even helping find that old restriction that some of us thought went missing!

I am sorry you are so frustrated. I can say alot of things that I think are true (like that weighing 185 is a crapload better then 224) but I know that doesn't help your feelings of failure and disappointment. I went through this after the lapband surgery and so I know how it feels.

Truth of the mater is that for me to make it to my goal i have had to "diet" and really seriously modify my eating. I eat like a bird,eat low carb and am quite active - if I didn't do all that, my weight loss would have stopped when I hit about 200#. I knew that intectually, but never could really do it with the lapband so I definately feel and understand all that you are saying.

If you want advice/help here how to attempt to lose more weight, this is a good group of people to get support from.

Where did you get your surgery? Have you had follow up appointments? Did you have a post-op plan?

Here's how I would tackle this if it were my issue:

Make an appt. with my program doctor. Bring documentation of how I have been eating and exercise I have been doing. If I felt like I could eat more than average (more than 4 oz. of firm protein), I would ask if the sleeve could be evaluated to see if there is a physical issue with the surgery results.

If that doesn't bring results, I would step up exercise - particularly strength training to build muscle, track my food and exercise with a tool that allows me to review it ( either online or in a paper journal) and weigh or measure my food. Also, I would keep carbs reasonable (one small serving per meal at two meals per day) and get them from whole grain or starchy vegetables. I would re-evaluate Protein vs calorie and look for lower calorie Protein sources. The 5:2 plan is good, but I would be very careful of what I ate even on the non-fast days. I would ratchet back calories until I began to lose.

If the calorie count that losing occurs at is super low I would make another appt with my Dr. to discuss why, bringing my food and exercise journal.

If that doesn't work, I would consider revision to RNY or DS.

I have kept every post-op appt and have done all my blood tests asked of me. I have an appt for my one year on Tuesday so your idea of bringing in my food journal is a good idea. I will admit exercise isn't where I'd like it to be. I have a lower back issue that slows me down, but sometimes I think it's more an excuse if I must be honest with myself. As for carbs and protein, my doctor wants me to eat 1200 calories and about 80-100 carbs. I get so many conflicting numbers, I don't know which amount to follow. My protein consists of chicken, fish, Greek yogurt (lots of it), milk, and cheeses. Any other ideas? I do feel restriction when I eat protein, but the funny thing is when I eat "junk food" it will always find its way down easy, I guess that's why we ought to stay away!

Seelessofme, I feel bad for you. I know it has to be very frustrating and I would feel the same. I lost so quickly and easily that I want to rant for you!!! :).

Along with the others who have responded, I would take a hard look at what you are REALLY eating calorie wise and carb wise. Log it.

Also, once your body stays at a certain weight for a while without actively trying to kickstart your loss by cutting back or reducing calories/carb you develop a set point and it will take WORK to get past it!

And like Lynda, I would def be asking to have my surgery checked out. And don't let them deter you!!! You paid for it!!!!!!! Good luck to you. Keep us posted. :)

Exercise will only are you so far. I do recommend it, but if you can't, you should still be able to lose. I do know that for some people, they have to eat less than 1200 calories per day and less carbs. Are you weighing your food? Portion creep can add a lot of extra calories. I'll be interested to see what your doc says after reviewing your eating log.

You are right about junk food. Stay away!

Yes, I am staying away. I usually eat around 900-1000, I tend to lose at the number but jeez the scale won't move! I'm saying since the beginning of January. But I will talk to my doc on Tuesday to see what they say.

It might be time to change it up. If you haven't experienced any regain, why not pad those numbers and see what you get? In a long stall situation you have three choices. Continue onward, changing nothing. Coops did this and many moons later finally broke through. Or you can add in 20% more calories, making sure that you're getting a really good mix of Protein, good quality grains and veggies and less poor quality choices. And you can always subtract 20% of your calories and move onward, seeing if that does the trick.

In truth, exercise will only get you so far. It's diet that does 90% of the work for you. So figure out why the diet isn't working. In some cases, our bodies just adapt quickly and we need to shake them up. And in some cases we slip into denial about our habits, too. I do it. Be sure you're not just estimating low. I was appalled to discover a few months ago that I was eating upwards of 1,800 calories in a day, without even realizing it and while telling myself I was never going over 1,300-1,500 - I even had days well over 2,000 calories. Was I gaining? No. But I was certainly making a gain a possibility, and I most definitely wasn't losing.

Thank you, definitely going to make some changes and see where this goes. The last time I changed, I discovered I was losing at 900 calories. Maybe adding a few more calories with more Protein (if that's even possible, it gets so hard to add more). My question is my go to for added protein is Greek yogurt. What is your take on that? I don't do protein powders well and trying to psych myself out to try it in my homemade Greek yogurt smoothie. Any thoughts?

I really agree with what is being said, I too "stalled" for months...I was really getting aggravated and disappointed. Then I really looked at what I was eating...I was eating "normal", I wasn't stalled I was really maintaining. Which is great if I was at maintenance. But I'm not, I still have 20-30 to go, so I went back to basics, Protein, fluid... Since I've dropped some more and I'm going to continue keeping track until I'm really ready to maintain.

Yeah, your words make lots of sense and I'm hoping, I'm just fooling myself and not done losing. I would like to be down another 30 pounds. I'm going to reassess my eating plan and see what I need to reassess. Hopefully it will jump start my weight loss again. Keeping my fingers crossed.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
