We're you ever thin before surgery?

Recommended Posts

I figure most people here have a similar story of having weight issues their whole life but I was wondering if you were ever thin (at or very near an ideal weight) and if so, for how long? Did anyone get heavy as an adult but were thin teens?

Weight has been an issue my whole life growing up in Miami. I lost 50 pounds between jr high and high school in the summer (every day spent running followed directly by swimming the going to the gym in the evening and eating around 800 calories and starving). I got down to 125 and stayed between 125-150 through college but always a struggle. Then when I started working in public accounting at a Big 4 firm, working 100 hours a week, my weight sky rocketed to 180 and then would bounce between 165-185. Fast forward to early thirties, broke the 200 mark, then lost 35, then got pregnant. After my daughter, I got. Ack down to 165 but lost my mom to a car accident, which rocked me pretty bad. Couple that with a change at my job which increased my international travel from 1 trip a year to 6-8 a year (15 days at a time) followed by losing my dad 2 years after my mom to cancer and I tipped the scales at 213 right before surgery.

I would say I was never naturally thin and struggled my whole life with weight. I had and still have friends who eat whatever they want and are so thin (my best friend who is 5'6" topped out at 140 9 months pregnant and has never drank a diet coke, eats fast food for Breakfast, etc)

What about you- we're you ever thin? Did you battle weight your whole life?

As a preteen I was heavy and went on my first diet when I was 13. Stayed thin throughout high school...5'6 125#. Was 135# by the time I married and gained every year and have been struggling for over 20 years.

I was chunky in jr. high, slimmed down summer before high school. Maintained a 36-28-36 figure through graduation. Then I got raped and packed on the pounds (subconsciously thinking that would keep me "safe"). Hit 165 (I'm 5'1.5"), then got married at 19 (again thinking i would be "safe") and had 3 kids in rapid succession, never losing baby weight between pregnancies and suffering pretty severe postpartum deppression. I found myself at 25, weighing 250, divorced and going back to school. Now I'm 33, my demons have been slayed, and I'm ready to let go of the last vestiges of the trauma in my life -- all this fat! Hoping for a September surgery date!

I wouldn't say I was ever thin, but I was not seriously overweight until I was an adult. I was an early bloomer...I had boobs & hips by 6th grade, so very hourglass curvy, not skinny. By the time I was 12 I looked like I was 18 or 19. I was athletic during my teens, but blew out my left knee when I was 17. Re-injured it 5 months later, which meant it would never fully recover. I gained maybe 20lbs after I married the first time at 21, but at 25 I started taking a medicine that had a side effect of increased appetite. My first hubs was an almost chef quality cook, so every night we ate seriously great food. The combo of those 3 things, plus my own lack of self-discipline, started me up the weight ladder in a major way. I have never been naturally thin, nor will I ever be. But I sure did used to be healthier, and I was able to move my body and walk and dance and enjoy pain-free days. That's what I want to achieve again, regardless of the number on the scale.< /p>

Your story is SO similar to mine. Overweight up until eighteen, 130 pounds through my entire 20s but obsessed over food to stay slim and suffered from bulimia for a while as a result. Hit 31 my mum and dad both died within 4 months of each other (suddenly), weight jumped 50 pounds. Got married and quit smoking and weight jumped another 30 pounds. Lost 10 pounds and had my son, then went up to 220/225. I was sleeved four weeks ago and I'm down 30 pounds! I've always been athletic and being so heavy really put a stop to sport for me so I can't weight to get some more weight off and play team sport again.

I was a big baby (9 plus pounds and 22 inches long). I was a tall child, but not heavy. In 2nd grade, I came down with a childhood illness, got really sick (allergic) and began to put on weight and kept putting it on throughout elementary. Middle school years the weight skyrocketed. I lost about 100 lbs before high school...trying every diet out, mostly using WW, & exercising constantly. I stayed 150-160 throughout my high school years & at my height, I was a perfect weight & never enjoyed one day of it...felt I had to be 120-125 lbs because of all the supermodels in the late 80s/early 90s who were my height and weighed less than 120. I continued trying every diet out there & the exercise. In college, I regained all that weight & then some. Just losing 20-30 lbs here and there, only to regain. After college, I lost it again using mostly WW, but not all of it - never got back to my high school weight...really had to work at it. I used WW for most of this weight loss. I got married..vicious cycle of gain/lose, gain/lose with WW...but again, I never got back to the high school weight. I lost 100 for the third time about 10 years ago & regained it after an accident & a permanent injury. Now, with wls, I have lost a little over 80 lbs. So, yes, once upon a time I was thin before surgery, but I never realized it or got to enjoy it...I WILL enjoy it this time around!

Thin all the way until my first pregnancy. Began the roller coaster of gaining and losing after that. Gained more and lost less with each pregnancy. Went on Medifast in the late 80s, lost 110 lbs and kept it off for almost 10 years - then menopause, depression, antidepressants and some other stuff and I put it all back on in about 8 months. Been at a constant battle since 2005. Now I'm battling to stay at one weight.

When I was a teen, I had a fabulous life. I was very active: In high school. I played basketball, volleyball, badminton, swam in competition, was a member of the Saddle Club, and was a "modern dancer." After I graduated, I went dancing 3 times a week, joined a Ski Club, spent summers on Lake Michigan and Wisconsin lakes, danced often in sock hops at roller rinks, went almost weekly to the world's largest amusement park, and had at least 2 boyfriends at a time.

Interestingly at 16, I weighed 116 lbs., 120 lbs. at 20, 130 lbs. at 30, etc., etc. For the most part, I was pretty slim, never really had a problem with weight or eating for most of my life.

In my early 50s a series of medical events led me on a downward path where I began to gain weight. Took steroids while receiving chemo, and began putting on weight like mad.

Like others who didn't gain weight until a major life event occurred (having babies, etc.) once I started to put weight on, it was like a train rolling downhill. The more time passed, the faster the train went, picking up a lot of extra weight as it rolled along. By 2011, I weighed over 400 lbs.

I'm about 380 lbs. now and my surgery is Aug 23. I'm grateful I didn't have to endure being overweight when I was young, but I've been morbidly obese for more than 10 years. I have a hard time believing I will ever be thin again.

I've never been anything but morbidly obese, with the exception of some temporary losses that put me into the simply obese category, at least since kindergarten. I have a couple pictures as a toddler where I looked like I was at a healthy weight (albeit, built like an ox). So nope, never known anything else. I'm about a week out and can't wait to get to a reasonable weight and to find out what I'm actually capable of.

I was thin even after my kids, 5'8 150-160. Diagnosed with PCOS and the weight followed after. At age 30 I weighed 180. If I can get back to that, I will be most pleased.

Yes, I was. It seems so long ago but I was thin until I got pregnant with my first child at age 29. I am 5'5". I went on my first diet when I weighed 141 pounds and got down to 128. I would kiss the ground now if I weighed 141 pounds. I have lost weight off and on but never managed to keep it off for more than about two years. My children have never seen me thin except in pictures. I hope for that to change this year or next. Depends on surgery date after tests are done.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
