Ok so I'm not a regular coffee drinker but I do enjoy a cup of coffee occasionally and when I met with my NUT today (almost 3 weeks post op) she said even at 6 weeks post op I'm still not allowed to have caffeinated coffee...

I find this irritating, when so many people drink coffee how&why would they just say "no caffeine"??

I'm far from an expert on the topic, but I heard somewhere that caffeine can contribute to dehydration. I have 2 cups of coffee a day, but I'm also 5+ months out and drinking tons and tons of Water (like 14-15 cups a day).

I too am no expert, but I read caffeine can increase the risk of ulcers in people in general, so it makes sense that is a reason to avoid it considering ulcers are a big concern in the first year. Personally, I hope that after kicking my caffeine habits that I can live without forever!

When I took the nutrition class the day before my surgery (July 16th), I asked my RN why it says you can drink Decaf coffee on the liquid diet, but not reg. She said "because the RD who transcribed the drs orders onto the sheet is a nazi". She said that 1 cup of coffee never hurt anyone, including bariatric patients. Now, I wouldn't go crazy with a whole pot :)

Luv my coffee. Waited almost 2 weeks post op cuz I was scared (of what, no clue) and drank some on Monday. Boy did I miss it. I think most drs say to cut back and mine is really conservative when it comes to the diet, but says moderate coffee is ok

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
