I am one week out from surgery today and still in a fairly good amount of pain. I am struggling with getting down my Nexium, which they directed to sprinkle into a drink. I cannot help but to gag with the Nexium when sprinkled. I'm still on Clear liquids and barely sipping enough Water. I just tried mixing it with watered down applesauce...no bueno! None of it when down.

Any suggestions on how to take this gross stuff? Anyone just take the pill itself without sprinkling it?

In the hospital we mix Nexium with apple juice. 1 teaspoon or tablespoon of apple juice mix the Nexium with it; stir for 5 seconds and drink it. Follow that up with adding back 1 teaspoon or tablespoon with Water back to the glass and swish the water around and drink to get the rest of the granules. I hope that helps.

I'm 3 weeks out and my surgeon is fine with me just taking the whole Nexium capsule because it's not very big. ( he basically said, " no horse pills)

My doctor prescibed Prevacid that dissolves under your tongue....maybe you can call your surgeon to see if they can switch your meds.

I took quite large capsules just fine from the second or third day post op, and nexium is small and smooth so goes down easily. Minimal Water, nice smooth action, don't force it down. Never had one come up or get stuck - not once. Good luck.

I was taking normal pills as soon as I got out of the hospital - the only ones that I used alternatives for (chewables) were the Calcium horsepills.

Many docs have a fear of pills post-op from their RNY experience where things like pills can very easily get stuck in the stoma (the little hole in the bottom of the stomach pouch that does the job - sorta - of the pyloric valve in a normal or sleeved stomach). This typically isn't a problem in our normal functioning sleeved stomach.

Called my doctor and they are giving me a different RX, but said I might still have the same issue...so we will see. They still don't want me to ingest the Nexium pill form due to healing.

I take the pill itself twice a day. I have since I was four days post surgery. Goes down pretty easily.
