I am getting ready to start a new Job and was wondering how quickly I would be able to go back to work? It's a social work position so it will be lots of paperwork but nothing really physical. I am worried about asking a new job for time off and I haven't even told them I am doing this at all.

I've heard of people going back to work the following week after surgery. I'm a nurse and returned to work 10 days postop. If I could have, I would have taken a few more days because my endurance wasn't very high at first. After about 3 12hr shifts, I was feeling more like myself. Good luck with your surgery and congrats on the new job!

I took 3 weeks off after VSG before returning to my desk job and even that was too soon for me. Also, I believe that sitting still for too long after surgery leads to adhesions, maybe get one of those giant balls to sit on at your desk?

Everyone is different, but depending on where you had your surgery (local vs. Mexico) and what your program entails, I would mention it to your supervisor. I also just started a new job and let the person in the interview know that I had surgery and with it comes some follow up appointments that I would need to leave a little early for. That way they knew from the beginning and it wasn't like "why does she get to leave early" type of thing.

First 3 to 5 days are the hardest. Walk a lot and never stop sipping Water. The more water you keep down the easier recovery is God Bless Prayers!!

I totally agree that everyone is different, we all react differently to anesthesia, recovery , meds etc. You'll need to gauge how you feel post-op. I had my surgery on a Tuesday and was back in my office on Monday. I did so with the warning to our president that I'll need to assess how I feel and leave if needed. He was ok with that. I made sure I had all my liquids at the ready and made sure to get up a few times an hour and walk. Though I did not tell everyone at my office I was having surgery, I did tell the two I work closely with. I felt better knowing that someone here knew my situation just in case there was an issue. I was off all pain meds, except for tylenol and felt pretty good. More healing time is always better, you'll have to make the call when you see how you are recovering.

I have a desk job and returned to work after 1 week. I actually felt fine after day 4 1/2 or so. So I could have returned on day 5, if I wanted to, but took the extra couple of days to just really rest up. The best advice I can give you, if you need to return to work in that 5 day range is get yourself on pain meds at home around day 2 or 3. You will need a couple days for the stuff to flush out of your system.

Thanks everyone! I have been working for 1 month and still haven't told them. I will need to figure it out soon because I was approved yesterday and I am scheduled for October 21st!
