kim2002 140 Posted July 30, 2013 And works 12 hr shifts? (Or any type of work) I'm having surgery on 8/8 and go back to work on 8/23! Just wondering how you felt when you went back to work and standing on your feet for that long and caring for patients?!? Were you totally exhausted at first! I know everyone is different, but just curious!! Kim
AmyInOrlando 348 Posted July 30, 2013 Hi Kim, I'm a Nurse on an Acute Psych Unit. I'm having surgery on 8/1, and I'm scheduled to return to work on 8/19. I've got a really stressful job, so I stay exhausted... but I leave it at work. I get off at 11:30 PM and by the time I get home I'm wide awake. I hope the surgery changes that since I won't be eating anymore from Midnight till I fall asleep. I would love being able to come home from work, go to bed at a decent hour and get up and go to the gym in the morning. Up until I started my pre-op diet I was coming home from work, bingeing till I passed out, slept late, woke up with a sugar and carb hangover and sat around watching TV till it was time to get ready for work. Those days are OVER !!!
tnellp 12 Posted July 30, 2013 Hi, I'm a telemetry RN & work 12 hour shifts. I took 4 weeks off, but probably could have gone back after 3 weeks. I've lost about 50 pounds so far & have so much more energy now. 12 hours days are definitely easier now that I've lost weight. Good luck!
kim2002 140 Posted July 30, 2013 That sounds like me!! I get off at 11pm and at the end if my week it takes me a whole day of sleeping to get over working my shifts, I hope after the first few weeks and starting the weight loss I will have more energy!!! Butterthebean 8,146 Posted July 30, 2013 Not a nurse....but I do work 12 hour shifts in a chemical plant so I'm on my feet and outside in the elements. I also switch back and forth each week from day shift to night shift 530-530. I took off the full 6 weeks because I had hernia repair while getting sleeved and my company doctor would not clear me to go back to work until they were confident I could lift 50 pounds....which is generally 6 weeks (especially after hernia repair). When I went back it was middle of June and outside it was flaming hot so I did struggle a bit, but not bad. Within 2 weeks of going back I felt terrific....100% better than before surgery. Mrs.RRn 2,111 Posted July 30, 2013 I'm a nurse and work med/surg/tele/ triage... A little of everything. Lol. I actually took nearly 2 months off- not bc I needed it, but my husband like me at home too much! Lol. So, by the time I went back, I was physically ready. On my first day back I was a little nervous about eating/ drinking, but it ended up working out fine (but I was the house supervisor that night which gave me a lot of leeway). It's just takes a lot of planning and a little rule breaking (eating and drinking in areas you shouldn't ) Just remember to ask for help when you need it! cynthia k 5 Posted July 30, 2013 Hi.... I work 12 hr shifts in labor and delivery...... My surgeon wanted to send me back after two weeks ;( there is SOOO much to figure out... Such as.... How to get fluids in ... And then how to properly chew your food, and get enough Protein in for the day.... The first two weeks your body heals, the next two are spent living in your new body.... If you can afford taking 4-6 weeks off..... It is well worth it...my first day back was so busy (typical) I was very happy I made sure I was ready to get back in to the swing of things . 2 Adglass and Mrs.RRn reacted to this
AmBeR09 60 Posted July 31, 2013 I'm so nervous as well. I'm a nurses assistant on med surg and lift a lot. My surgeon said 2wk out, 3 tops
ShanRN 58 Posted August 2, 2013 I'm an RN on a busy pediatric unit and I'm taking 7 weeks off. Partly for the lifting restriction (you'd be amazed how many kids launch themselves at you and just assume you'll catch them lol) and partly so I can have an eating/drinking routine in place before going back. I suspect I will be sneaking dixie cups of Water between patients to ensure I'm drinking enough. 2 SmilinNC and Mrs.RRn reacted to this
Macy6 356 Posted August 2, 2013 Great question, I am scheduled for the 27th and should go back sometime after the 1st of October. So around 4-5 weeks, but I have weekly labs for school starting 9 days post op. I already warned I might be worthless at times.

NikkiV1986 121 Posted August 2, 2013 I'm a paramedic and took 4 weeks off due to lifting restrictions. I'm glad I took the time off, since it allowed me to figure our how to eat. I pack my food for the day too. That way I always have something and am not tempted to get something from a gas station. The first couple weeks back were difficult. I felt extremely tired and weak. Once I got back into a routine (and with the weight loss) my energy has sky rocketed. I work out before work and usually have plans after work!! I love it!! Good luck to those waiting to be sleeved!! 1 AmBeR09 reacted to this

becksnky 25 Posted August 3, 2013 This is a what I was looking for in a post. I am scheduled for surgery on Aug 15 and starting a new job on 9/3. I work as a nurse practitioner. My first few weeks should be light work. I am very nervous about this, this will be 2 1/2 weeks post op. I should have the flexibility to drink, sip, eat as I need. I will be with another NP for orientation for 4 weeks. Any thoughts?
