IdahoGirl32 89 Posted July 30, 2013 I've heard it's possible to use the cost of your surgery and travel in Mexico as a tax deduction, as long as it's more than 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income. Did anybody do this? Or perhaps there's a tax-professional sleever here who can advise?

Will 61 Posted July 30, 2013 Does anyone know if you can do this as self pay in the USA?
sarsar 824 Posted July 30, 2013 Yes this can be done, under the right circumstances, as were stated above. Our accountant did this when he did our taxes. It doesn't matter if you had your surgery in Mexico or the US. 1 zoey1176 reacted to this
nerlyc 15 Posted July 30, 2013 I'm a tax professional and the answer is yes!!! You can deduct anything over 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. The expenses include the actual surgery, cost of travel and even the cost of hotel stay. For example I had to travel 2 hours to get my sleeve, the surgeon required I stay in town for 1 week. All the expenses I incurred from this trip I will be deducting. This includes the procedure, prescriptions, copays, hotel, food and gas. With that said you probably spent more $$ on pre op work as well those items can also be included. I have a growing list where I am tracking every single thing I am spending on medical expenses. 5 ShaWillia, sarsar, ducky125 and 2 others reacted to this
Nicolanz 1,484 Posted July 30, 2013 I read that if you get audited, you also have to show proof of medical necessity. I calculated it in last year and it didn't change anything so I didn't risk it.

If anyone had surgery with Dr. Aceves you can call/email Gaby or Nina and they will send you a letter for the surgery. At least that was done for me a couple of years ago.
