4 days post-op: The shakes I have been drinking contain dietary fiber

Recommended Posts

Dear Forum Friends,

I am four days post-op (had my surgery on Thursday). I am freaking out right now because I just noticed (from reading the nutrition label) that the Protein shakes I've been forcing myself to drink contain three grams of dietary Fiber. Specifically, the brand is Pure Protein, Frosty chocolate (purchased at Wal-Mart).

I'm supposed to be on a liquid diet for two weeks. Isn't fiber a solid, and thus hard on my new stomach? Have I injured myself? I went online and looked up other shakes that are popular and found many of them contain fiber. For example:

Premier Protein Shake: 2 grams of dietary fiber

Unjury Chocolate Splendor: 1 gram of dietary fiber

Pure Protein vanilla Creme Shakes: 2 grams of dietary fiber

Pure Protein Frosty Chocolate: 3 grams dietary fiber

Nature's Best® Isopure Zero Carb - Stawberries and Cream: 2 grams of dietary fiber

Can anyone shed some light on this? I am very worried!!!

I don't know what your surgeon's plan says but mine didn't care about fiber. As long as my intake was liquid, it was fine to contain fiber.

If you're really worried, I'd make a call to their office just to double check.

Pure Protein Frosty chocolate was the only flavor of Protein Shake I liked after surgery, and I drank several cases the first month with no problems.

I think that most of the Protein Shakes have some fiber in them but not enough to hurt us. All the ones that you listed were on the approved list given to me by my NUT, but check with your Doc, it will make you feel better.

I would find out your surgeon's recommendation, but mine actually encouraged Benefiber during the liquid phase bc once the diarrhea stops you can get really constipated.

Thanks TES. Constipation is another problem. I have not had a bowel movement since before my surgery. I was sleeved on Thursday (four days ago). Wondering if i should take a laxative?

Milk of magnesia is what my surgeon told me to take for constipation. I have not had any problems with that at all yet so haave not tried it. I drink the EAS AdvantEdge carb control in chocolate & strawberry they have less then 1gram of dietary fiber in them. I get them at wal-mart. Best of luck on your journey!!! I have been on an emotional rollercoaster since my surgery too so I have been trying to stay away from everyone for now. Had a melt down a week after my surgery. It will get better, well that is what I hear, still waiting for that day lol... I was sleeved on july 18th.

Premier Protein shake is the best choice for me.. I love the choc.. I let it get really cold ( icy) in the freezer and it tastes great.. 30g of Protein .. I drink 2 a day and eat a Greek yogurt and that in itself is 73 grams of protein easily..

Is the premier protien shake an already made one or is it a powder? I am really thinking about trying them. I have seen so many people saying that is what they use. Where can you buy them at?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
