anyone experienced bad breath after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I'm 3 1/2 weeks post op and I'm experiencing really bad breath. Sorry for the TMI, but I'd like to know if somebody else had or has the same issue. I hope this will go away :(

Yep I sure did. It gets better when you start eating more carbs

I hear the same thing. Some people say that it's your staples inside that's healing so that's why it smells like that.

I have horrible breath! My youngest came up to me one day & said that I smelled like "poopy"! OMG! I can actually taste the bad breath too! I hate it! I brush my tongue & it stays looking white too from the toothpaste. Yuck.

One of the side effects of burning fat and being on a low carb diet is "Ketosis". It is a complex metabolic process, but the bad breath is a major indicator of your body actively burning fat because all the glycogen (easily stored and burned glucose based fuel) has been used up. Look at the horrible breath as confirmation that your body is using your fat stores.

Its normal from burning your fat stores and it goes away as you start eating more food esp carbs. Tic tacs helped me just dont swallow or chew them.

Yup it is a sign of ketosis. My husband and i have a running joke now about the smell of weight loss lol.

He said he doesnt mind because of what it indicates and because it wont be forever.

Btw i love altoids sugar free mini mints now!

It's thrush, I have a wicked case of it myself. Once we get the Proteins back in it may help or yogurt seems to do the trick also.

Same for me and I always have a horrible taste in my mouth. I was assuming it would get better once I start eating some regular foods. I am constantly brushing and flossing and now keep tic tacs with me. Glad to hear it will get better.

Thanks Catherine707, it makes sense now and I like the fact that is related to burning fat! I'll get some tic tacs in the mean time.

I looked up on line suggestion for home remedy treatments, cider vinaigrette rinse, lemon juice rinse, baking soda rinse. I've opted to wait it out until I can eat yogurt and get the healthy bacteria going again.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
