EGD... ugh. Pain after?

Recommended Posts

I had my EGD this morning, no sedatives. It was okay, and went quick but my stomach, chest and back hurt. Nothing too bad, but it's making me really uncomfortable. Is there anything I can do to make it feel better? Eating seems to make it worse.

This is not "usual". If it continues, call your MD.

Contact your doctor.

I was sore after my EGD- my doctor told me to take Tylenol, but it didn't really help. I was sore on the inside from the biopsy's that they took. They also told me no coffee or acidic or spicy foods for a few days- just a bland diet. I ate ice cream and that helped (I was pre-op). I was sore for two days and then I was fine.

Do you mean you were fully awake during it? I had one before surgery with twilight sleep. I had no pain other than a slight sore throat. That was gone by the next day.

If you were awake i wonder if you fought against it and strained musçles. Either way, it isn't normal and you should contact your Dr.

Yes, I was fully awake. I did not fight it but there was some erosion and he did take biopsies. I'm thinking I must have been pretty tensed up, and they had the bed elevated while I was on my side. Anyway, with a little sleep I'm feeling a bit better.

That's good, I'm glad you're a bit better. I don't mean to steal your thread but it has reminded me of my personal EGD horror story.

Many years ago I had my first EGD. My husband was handed a pager and told to go to the main waiting room and wait for it to beep before returning for me. It would be 30 minutes to an hour they said. I was given twilight sleep. I woke up slumping off the side of a wheelchair in an empty room. I was unable to hold my head up. My husband was nowhere to be seen and neither was anyone else. I was extremely groggy, much more than I should have been. I managed to get the wheelchair to the door and open it. Eventually a nurse walked by. Just as I feared I had been forgotten in this room and my husband had never been beeped. He was furious because it had been 4 hours since he had seen me and he had tried and failed to get to the back many times. Nobody he asked had any information or offered to look for any. The next day I was in pain head to toe. I thought it was normal. A week or so later I phoned for results since I hadn't heard. Guess what I was told? I had fought and gagged so wildly even sedated that it could not be completed. I had sat around wondering for a week what the had found only to learn they hadn't bothered to tell me it was never done because the scope never went past my throat. They had over-sedated me trying to get me deep enough to stop fighting them to no avail. I spent many years not going back for an EGD when I actually needed one because I thought there was something wrong with me and that it couldn't be done. Turns out there was something wrong with the Dr (loosely used), nurse anesth. and facility. All were incompetent. EGD and twilight sleep when properly done are not painful and do not leave you in a state of blubbering idiocy for 24 hrs.

Sorry, back to your regularly scheduled program.

Oh my goodness that is horrific. That is the main reason I refused the sedation! They wanted to give me versed which is the twilight sleep. The nurse asked if I ever had it and I hadn't, so how could I have an opinion about it. In the end, the doctor was shocked at how well I did. I did better than a sedated person lol

What's an EGD?

Upper endoscopy. They stick a camera on a tube down your throat. Not fun lol

I love twilight sleep when its administered properly. That day all the stars were misaligned for me and nothing went right.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
