Anyone had Lap Band on the NHS? how long was the waiting list?

Recommended Posts

Hi ,

I am still at the research stage at the moment.

I would like to talk to local people ,who have been banded in the UK on NHS.

I was wondering how long the waiting list was for people on NHS .

Any stories, advice, info , would be much appreciated.

Hi Helen,

I was on the waiting list for just over a year. I'm in Glasgow but have heard that other people only wait a few months - just depends where you are.

The first time I asked my gp she wouldn't refer me - it took me another year to build up courage to ask again - I even wrote her a letter before going in to talk about it again - else I would've burst into tears - I also wrote to every surgeon I could find who performed the surgery - but in the end she did refer me - I had an appointment with the surgeon shortly afterwards - I was never aware of any funding problems as this was never mentioned.

One thing I have become aware of is that the aftercare from the NHS can leave a lot to be desired - I have to wait 5 months for my first fill - I've heard of others only having 2/3 fills per year - but this isn't always the case - some people have excellent care - again it all depends where you are.

Good luck and let us know how you get on,

Yvonne

Hi helen i had my band done on nhs, the waiting list in my area is 6 months from being put on a list.

Dear Sugarplum,

Im very interested in your history and weightlost. I see that you have your bands op back in 2005 ie. near 15months ago and you have lose an incredible amount of weight. I've mine done privately in Belgium back in Sept 06, so only 5months ago. Have lost 21lbs todate and have 35lbs to go. My band can take 7ml (or is it cc?) fill and I've been filled to near max near 3wkes ago, but weight lost has stopped even though I barely can eat anything.)

You have done so well. Did your weight plateau at some point in yr 15months?? And if it did, how did you get it to start losing again?? Can you tell me are you fill to near max too?? What is your daily intake of food like?? Please can you advise. Truly grateful for any help.

Sincerely,:rolleyes

Your first port of call should always be your GP if you are looking to have a band on the NHS, you will need a referral from your GP.

Each PCT has a protocol to follow and so it would be wrong to try and second guess what will happen where you are. In some PCT's they refer you to an endocrinologist, others have an obesity clinic set up. Some just refer straight to the bariatric surgeon.

Good luck with your journey.

I went to see my GP last week, explained what I would like to have done. I actually have a chronic backproblem so he knows it would be benefitial to me. He has written to a Mr Boyle immediatly as he hopes he will be able to help me, if not put me in the right direction.

I will keep a diary of every move in this route of getting banded as it will help others.

Cheers,

Very Hopeful Daisy

:clap2:

My surgeon said he wil put me on his list after I have seen the dietition...my next appointment with my surgeon is in september, when he will put me on his list, the waiting time will be between 4-6 months, apparently that is how long it will take to go thru the motions for funding etc.

By the way, this post was started by me, but I lost my password.

hello everyone, have just joined up, my story so far, i have researched on the net about lap banding and went to ask my dr for a referal letter to have it done at a private clinic, which she did for me after she had consulted with my other dr, got in touch with the private clinic who approached the pct on my behalf, the pct want me to go to the clinic on 5th november for a consultation and to fill in a form for the pct, so fingers crossed, my dr says the waiting list for nhs is 3 years [boo].

i am the only person that has asked for this at my dr's ,i am so desperate for this operation i have now been a non smoker for 5 weeks, if only i could give food up this easy!

Hi,

I was put on the list in March 2007 and had my operation in November. Although I live in the Newark and Sherwood NHS Trust area my operation took place in Derby.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
