When and why do most people have trouble maintaining goal weight after gastric sleeve success?

Take a stroll through the vets forum and you find many answers to your questions about long term success as interpreted by many different vets. I am sure you will find a lot of information there.

Frankly, from my end of the spectrum, a person who has yet to hit goal even after 3 years, these are champagne problems. If I got to goal I would be so happy.

Vets forum, for sure.

But quickly:

1) Not addressing the "why" of our obesity and kicking those habits (or learning how to live with them) prior to goal

2) Not learning a way to eat forever that keeps you satisfied, helps you feel more "normal" but also doesn't go too far and make you gain

3) You must remain accountable to yourself and remain vigilant about the scale

4) Some "forget" they were fat people and eat like they don't have food issues or like they don't need to watch the scale, or they fall into denial about how much they're really eating or drinking.

5) Maintenance is just plain hard and we don't really acknowledge that when our eyes are on what we think the big prize is: goal

I think I will add in the fact that as we age we need less calories. What you can eat to maintain at age 30 is not what you can do at age 40 or 50 even with the same activity level. Frankly that's true whether you have had surgery or not. You do have to remain vigilant with the scale and address any gains as soon as possible.

I would elablorate that if you sit on your butt and don't excercise it will get bigger along with the rest of you.

True! A sedentary lifestyle will pack on the pounds. And I want to add that exercise doesn't necessarily mean classes or treadmills - just being a more active person will help immensely. I walk everywhere, take stairs, spend hours on my feet, actively play with my kids (instead of watching from the bench) and make small choices each day to stay moving. But I still hate "formal" exercise so I do what I can to avoid making my bootay bigger while also avoiding the gym.

If it isn't fun we likely won't stay at it. Imagination must be engaged to change the way we move and put good stress on the muscles and heart/lungs while not boring the mind into an apathetic stupor.

I have found hard work very rewarding, it has replaced my running uphill with weights. My muscles and heart/lungs are hanging in there. The weak link is my back,(spine), and joints. There is the place where my 64 years demand to be recognized. <_<

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.

      Woohoo! I have 7 more days till surgery, So far I am already down a total of 20lbs since I started this journey.
