Antidepressents before surgery

Recommended Posts

I feel like I've been holding on to my sanity by a very fine thread the last few years. I have a son that's almost 4 and I really don't think I've been the same personality wise, patience wise, tolerance wise since he was born. I wasn't ever diagnosed with PPD but really wonder if maybe I had it.

I'm considering making an appt to talk to my PCP about getting started on some meds to see if that helps. I'm scheduled for my sleeve 8/29.

Anyone start taking meds right before surgery? I appreciate your comments...thx.

I didn't right before surgery, but I did about 6 months before. It is what helped me to finally be able to think clearly about getting help for my weight. I was always in denial about needing some sort of tool. I am two years out now and I have been off of those meds for over a year now, and I am doing wonderfully. Just because you need to get some chemicals in check doesn't mean you are crazy, or that you aren't normal either. You may not need them forever, but goodness I know I needed them for a while. Good luck to you. And good job at recognizing that you may need some help! :)

You should get started right away because they take a couple weeks to kick in. My surgeon asked me to taper off one of my antidepressants for the surgery. Truthfully, I may miss about 5 days of my normal medications, but i'll get right back on them as soon as I can take them.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
