August 13th Surgery Team & Support: Anyone?

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I was just approved by my insurance (Aetna) yesterday for an August 13th surgery date. I'm so nervous! I didn't want to start believing it was going to happen until I was approved by insurance. I started this journey in March and did nutritional counseling and other pre-op appointments over the last few months.

Now it's all too real! I've never been in the hospital, never had surgery, never broken anything (lol) so this is all new.

I started out with the idea of getting lap band but after some research decided that my lifestyle and needs are best met by this surgery.

I start my two week liquid diet on 7/30.

I have consent for surgery and pre-admission testing next week.

I would love to have some teammates for surgery and recovery. BTW I'm in New Jersey.

Best!

Mira

Hi Mira

Congrats on your approval. I too live in New Jersey and am scheduled for surgery on Aug 23rd.

I would love to be teammates and get through this together.

I have never had surgery either and must admit I'm a bit nervous but I want this so bad nothing is going to stop me this time.

Last year in July I was scheduled to have the lap band inserted and for some reason I changed my mind and cancelled it a few weeks before. I'm so glad I did becuase after doing further research I realized the SLEEVE is the way to go for me and my personality.

Where in New Jersey are you from, who is your doctor, what hospital??

Maria

Hi Maria: I'm in South Jersey and using Cooper University Hospital with Dr. O'Connell. The offices are in Voorhees and Camden.

Yes I was so into the lap band until I did more research.

Are you doing a liquid diet or is that optional for you?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
