Does water in protein drinks count towards your daily req's

Recommended Posts

I'm sure this is a silly question, but I have to ask it as I have surgery in 6 days. After surgery I have to have 60 oz of Water a day -- at least. Does the water I add to a Protein Drink for example, count towards that requirement?

I'm normally a water drinker. I love the stuff. But I'm a chugger! I've been practicing "sipping" my water the past few days and holy cow does it take a longgggg time to get through a bottle of water at that rate.

Any advice is appreciated :)

Yes it does count!! Don't worry about the sipping part...in no time you will be able to drink Water almost like you used to...

I too was a hardy Water drinker...until I had the sleeve..then for some reason I could not stand the taste of it...I added 1/2 and 1/2 G2 Gatorade in case of hydration issues and only now after 9 months am I drinking water again alone without anything added to it....

She's right...keep A bottle of water with you at all times and sip.....

Hope after the surgery you are still in love with water..I now am having a good relationship with it again!!!!!!

I put Protein Powder in my Water, I get it from nectar, it's lemonade  ..Funny thing about your post, that was so me! My biggest complaint after the surgery, was that darn it I wanted a DRINK...and water is still the hardest on my tummy if I drink too much. When I mix it with something, then I'm ok. My doc is ok with it and counts it as water intake, but you may want to speak to yours and see if they count it as water.

I've seen different answers to this question. For my bariatric team, yes, Protein drinks counted towards our daily Fluid. For others, their doctors did not want to count it.

I was a chugger too. The first few days after surgery it is difficult to get Fluid in. Your sips will be tiny. Getting down my first Protein Drink post surgery was literally an all day affair. It was later in the first week that I woke up one day and felt like I could take some more normal sips. I had surgery in April & now I can get down my fluids pretty quickly again if I wanted to. Not quite the same chug, but a pretty good pace. You might want to have some sugar free popsicles on hand for post surgery. They only have a couple oz of fluid in them, but they helped me get in some fluid at a somewhat decent pace. Otherwise I was prone to taking a sip, and leaving a glass lying around forever.

Good luck!

My bariatric team says count it. We (their patients) are required to get 64 ounces of Fluid each day and any fluid counts, including Protein Drinks, broth, etc. It will all keep you hydrated.

I concur. My nurse said that every Fluid except caffeine can count towards as your daily allotment.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
