Post op 3 weeks today!

Recommended Posts

Hello I am new here and this is my first post. Today is 3 weeks since my procedure and I'm feeling great over all. Still a bit painful. I've lost over 30 lbs so far. I see my doc on Thursday and I'm a bit concerned I cannot find a Protein Drink I like and can't seem to make myself drink them. I am so tired of the liquid diet and I go through small bouts of depression over it. Just wandering how long that lasts and if anyone has gone through similar?

Welcome to VST BCjoe! I am also celebrating my three week post op today, and my follow up is Thursday too! I am switching to purée/soft foods today and I hope you will get to soon as well- it opens up a whole bunch more flavors to you. But in the meantime, have you tried savory things like Soup broth, Healthwise or other bariatric Soups like cream of Tomato that have 15g of Protein per packet? I add a few dashes of Tabasco, garlic powder and celery salt and it really "kicks it up a notch" as Emeril would say! I also eat out as restaurants that have broth based soups and ask them to give me as much broth as possible since I just had stomach surgery and they have all been very accommodating. Plus it's nice to get out of the house! I've had French onion soup with no cheese, no bread, chicken tarragon with tortellini (sans chicken chunks & tortellini) and at home had strained campbell's vegetable beef soup. To all of these you could add unflavored Protein Powder to up the protein (as long as the temp is under 140 degrees because it will curdle). As for regular protein powder, my surgeon's office recommends Syntrax Nectar, and it is very yummy- especially mixed with milk or soy milk. They have lots of flavors and they mix very well- popular flavors include fuzzy navel (tastes like OJ with a touch of peach), Cappuccino (similar to Starbucks frap from the grocery store), double stuffed cookie (Oreo shake), and vanilla bean (close to melted vanilla ice cream). You can buy a sample

pack of 11 or so flavors from various bariatric product websites if you want to try it out. I occasionally feel depressed too about liquids, but then I realize how short this actually is compared to the rest of our lives- we will get to eat again, plus we want to give our stomachs time to heal up properly! I mix it up so I don't eat shakes all the time- for dinner I'll have the bariatric Tomato Soup and have bariatric hot chocolate for dessert- boom- 30g of protein down! Don't forget to take your Vitamins and exercise (walk, walk, walk) so you stay healthy and let your body burn fat and not muscle. Before we know it, we'll be posting before and after pics on here too!

I am right there with you about those Protein Shakes. I can drink them - but, am so tired of drinking them. So, I started to mix my Nector Vanilla Bean Protein in some sugar free applesause. Mix it really good and it does dissolve pretty good. It is really good!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
