I can't really remember anyone posting about this, so I wanted to share my story. I was just sleeved 7/22 @7:30 AM at Victory Hospital in Houston with Dr. Yu.

Everything pre-op and during surgery went well, but I'm one of those lucky ones who had a bad reaction to either the morphine, Tylenol 3 or anesthesia. I was writhing in bed in discomfort every 1-2 hrs when I would wake up to pee. The pain wasn't that bad as you have a ball of pain reliever inside of your tummy going directly into your tummy. The pain doesn't really bother you if you get situated well and are propped up, just stand slowly and don't lay flat!

For me the nausea was the worst and I didn't feel anyone had prepared for that feeling, so that's why I'm sharing. I was throwing up/dry heaving Water and propel 0, had low grade fever, BP was high and was so incredibly dizzy that I was not wanting to be conscious anymore. They gave me 2 anti nausea meds which helped me sleep but I'd wake up every 1.5 hrs needing more. At one point I had to go for a walk with the Phys therapist bc they were not taking no for an answer. Luckily today around 8am the Dr gave permission to give me some magical combination of pain/anti nausea meds that worked wonders. It literally felt like an exorcism was performed on me, that's how much it helped.

Some annoyances, that I'm sure are for good purposes that I didn't know going into it: your legs are strapped into a massaging device all night. So everytime you have to pee, it's an ordeal, also you get heparin shots in your stomach, kinda weird, and the respiratory therapist comes by and makes you breathe into some plastic apparatus to measure your capacity (which is very low post surgery), but tells you to do it 10x/hr you are awake to which I replied with a look like 'you're outta your damn mind'. Next is heat, you may feel low grade feverish so a cold compress is great, not to mention aids with the dryness you feel in your mouth. The nurses have these great sponges you can soak in water and chew on too, those felt good.

This afternoon Dr made his rounds and sent me home, seems kinda soon, but I am feeling much better. Just super sleepy, and HOT w soreness and gas pains. All in all, I know it will be worth it, but not sure I'd ever like to go through another night like lastnt.

PS: this is just my experience, my BFF was sleeved at the same time in the same hospital and didnt have the bad reaction to the meds that I did.

I had dr Scarborough from the same office, and didnt have those complications. I'm so sorry. I was sleeved on July 2nd and doing great. Tlc is awesome.

Jess86, reading your post and glad you are feeling better and past the surgery. I had forgotten some of the things you brought back like the heparin, vibrating leg things and nausea.

I ALWAYS get nauseous after anesthesia and was lucky enough to get some good anti nausea med early on.

I certainly didn't experience what you did but thanks for preparing others for what can happen.

I experienced a similar but less severe episode like you but after first day did well with no complications. Never looked back! 3 years out and doing great!!

Ahhh...yes, I had those leg squeezers on too, but I had a catheter so I got to rest ~ well sorta! I too had a nausea aversion to the pain meds so they had to give me an anti nausea med to help me not want to barf. I still felt like I might so each time I pushed the pain pump, I grabbed the handy pink pail & stuck it under my mouth...just in case. Never did vomit tho ~ thankfully. I was sent home with anti nausea meds too as well as pain meds.

What made my experience horrendous was that I was in the room with a crazy lady! She had the bed by the window & she screamed all night long. So nurses & techs were coming & going all night long with machines on carts & each time they passed my bed, they bumped into it, sending me jolting half out of my bed! Same with just walking back & forth, I can't tell you how many times some worker tripped on my bed, which jolted my bed again.

At one point the lady started screaming to the nurses "Kill me, please Kill me!" By that point, I was ready to chirp up & say to the nurses "if you don't, I WILL!" So much for being a good Christian! OMG that lady just about killed me that night, not letting me rest for more than 10 mins at a time. So I complained to anyone & everyone who would listen to me & about 6am, they moved me to another room!

I went from Hell to Heaven. They moved me into a room with the SWEETEST 92 y/o lady! I would have brought her home with me if I could. She was so concerned if her TV was too loud for me (where the other crazy one left her TV on all night at the loudest volume). Her machine kept going off & beeping if she moved her right arm for some reason & she'd be all upset that I had to hear the beeping. By that point, after what I had endured in the other room, it really didn't bother me but I did ring the nurses to ask if they could unbeep her arm (haha). One of them showed me how to do it too but I was afraid, just in case it meant something. We both nearly cried when it was time for me to be released....I hope she's doing fine but she had heart & renal problems....poor thing. Anyway, I got both the bad & the good all rolled up in one 24 hour period at the hospital!

I also was assigned a nurse's assistant who had been on the job (from school) for her second day. She was the BEST assistant ever too. So gentle, so kind & so caring. Hope she will remain that way as time goes on. The nurses were abusing her ~ making her do everything while they did nothing. Then again, I don't know how hard the nurses were working with others. I can only post what I saw happening to me.

So that's my story & I'm sticking to it!

Hope your feeling like yourself in a few days. How painful we're the heparin shots?

I'm glad your writing this post! It's not always smooth sailing like many people say on these boards.....someone wrote that they woke up in half an hour after surgery and two hours later were having ice chips and propel.....well for me....

I had my surgery at 1pm and didn't wake up until 10 pm with a very dry mouth....the nurse would not even get me ice chips or Water...I had to send my brother to get me a cup of Water so I could gargle it out...at least my mouth was getting some moisture! On top of that I was severely nausiated and I was getting lots of gas that would hurt soooooo much! I was placed in a unit for heart patients....apparently there was no room in the surgery ward....my nurse had no clue what to do with me.....it felt as if it was her first day....she was trying to put morphine in my IV, but for some reason didn't close the knob I was bleeding all over the place....I was not allowed to drink water or have any ice chips all night I kept gargling, then my leak test was done the next day at 1pm, which made me throw up blood, and it hurt ALOT!!! Finally by 3pm the next day, I was allowed some water and all of a sudden they bring in broth, apple juice and Jello for me to have! Thankfully I knew to take it easy and start with tiny sips of water...I was not allowed to walk, the nurse kept on insisting I needed to rest when I kept insisting that I can go to the bathroom myself! Let me at least walk to the bathroom....but she was very rude and but a bedpan on me and wouldn't allow me to get up, thankfully when the new nurse came in the morning, she allowed me to walk to the bathroom by myself!

Good luck on your recovery, I'm 14 days out and feel much better!

The morphine sucked big time. I just stopped using it and felt great. I had the best nurses. It helped too that I had a private room.

I forgot to mention the dry mouth! OMG! That was almost worse than anything else! I felt like someone stuffed cotton balls inside my mouth. I used that mouth sponge they gave me to rub all over my mouth, gums, etc...nothing worked but ice chips when they finally let me have them. I had to stop saying I felt nauseous before they let me have some tho! My mouth was dry for nearly the entire week after returning home. No matter what I was drinking, it felt dry until about 2 days ago (I'm 8 days post op today).

I forgot about that too! I asked for the wet sponge and was told not to eat the ice or drink the Water. I was surprised. But I obeyed. The next day I had broth yuck. I did better with Water.

Being home today has been great. I tried crystal light but the flavor I selected is not working been doing great getting water in and tried SF Jello also so far so good. I'll pick a different flavor of crystal light and see what happens.

I do notice that when I wake up from naps my mouth is dry, but not as dry as waking from post op.

Im 2 days post op and have dry mouth after naps! Having problems getting in enough water. Any suggestions

I have not experienced that. I've been sipping all day and after a nap I find I have to try to make myself pee. But no dry mouth.
